democracy in essence ensure the majority view over the minority. one of the main reasons we have a republic is to ensure the minority view point from bias and things. if we went by this definition, we could say slavery is still acceptable.bible clearly says slavery is fine, and that ti created the notion of master/slavery.
we accept people are equal regardless of skin color, but sexual orientation is still taboo.
as to the "wall of seperation" that's in the federalists papers. all the constitutions says is that the us will not establish a national religion. doesn't mean anything that the us can't accept religious concepts, or have the only presidents ever to run are christians.
The Bible does have slaves/masters. It's not the same as American slavery. It was a farming society, it wasn't that much different than working for a boss with room and board as part of your compensation. I don't see anything wrong with that, it worked for the time. Sure there are examples in the Bible that are not positive experiences, but the Bible has all kinds of things in it that are not condoned but instead given as examples of what not to do showing consequences, etc.
You're right that that is all the constition says, but how it's used in practice is very different and much broader reaching. It's becoming very accepted and almost socially encouraged in this country to disrepect Christianity - and that's been used for a lot of it.
Most presidents have been Christian. It's believed that Lincoln wasn't. Kennedy was Catholic. I don't believe Obama is. That's between him and God, but I don't believe any true Christian would carry a Hindu statue.

room and board isn't close to the same thing as slavery. indentured servants had the same job as slaves. but they were given land after they did their time.slaves worked for no wages and were chattle. treated as property.
as to how the practice of the wall, its "disrespecting" Christianity in the sense traditional christian things might not happen anymore. we might not have cities having nativity scenes, or people in malls wishing you a merry christmas. is this really disrespecting christianity or is this more trying to fix the past cases where its a christian culture and we're trying to make it even. no store here is going to have hanakuh sales, or kwanza sales... instead of having all, is having none really that bad?
aside from kennedy and now obama, there's not much solid proof to show anyone who's elected isn't a WASP. there's theories about some.. but the general consensus is they were some version of protestant. biggest fear of anyone voting for kennedy is he'd listen to the pope on any decision. shows the judgment of quite a few voters..
