The absolute cheapest you can go, if you have enough related knowledge, would be to buy a bunch of ESP8266s, some water contact sensors (something like https://www.arrow.com/en/products...gy-limited ), some power supplies for the ESP8266s (if you get boards that already have a USB interface, they can be powered via usb power plugs for cheap… if you don't, they can also be powered by usb power plugs, but you'll need a step down regulator to 3.3v), and then use a library like ST_Anything [smartthings.com] (assuming your hub is smartthings).

Reliable, long life battery powered gets more complicated and you're better off just paying the price for a bunch of pre-built sensors that get good reviews if you're not comfortable coding a bit and experimenting. Not that it can't be done, but you'd need to know enough to re-code the MCU to go into a timed sleep state (not difficult by itself—or better yet, use a latching circuit or AT_TINY to interface the sensor and pull RST low) without interfering with how that library works, not to mention needing to add a heartbeat and battery monitor to the device.

The currently cheapest pre-built connected water sensor I'm aware of the is the Insteon one for about $20, which requires an Insteon hub. Most of the z-wave/wifi ones are $30ish at the cheapest. $34 is roughly a normal price. The Smartthings branded ones are currently $31.20 at smartthings.com with the 20% off in cart, or $31.99 at amazon, but honestly if you're buying in bulk you're probably better off waiting for a better sale on the detectors, if you're not going to make your own.

Anyway, in terms of the shut-off valve control, that's actually a really good deal. Most mechanized ball valves are expensive enough (you don't want to use a solenoid valve for your mains) that adding connectivity/etc would get you to this price anyway, and this just sits on your current one instead of requiring adding one in line with it (blahhhh) which is worth the price alone in terms of saving work.

They also have a 30% "new Customer" deal where you give them your email and get a 30% coupon. I didn't know they had this product...or their mouser, so I'm going to say thanks for the deal because I didn't know about the product. But that said it seems to be a normal price/discount?

Did the 30% new customer happen to stack?

I'd rather not sign up for the email if it's not going to stack is all.

I think these are usually $99 because I was looking at them before. There are similar models that are about $69 usually it seems. I think the op listed it as a combined deal as the water sensor and shut off valve together. The $69 is actually a good price for just the shut off valve.

If you just buy the Shut off valve the shipping price was a ridiculous $19.99, bringing it on par with $89.99 price on Amazon, the combo was cheaper by $15 compared toDome Z-Wave Plus Flood Prevention Kit [thesmartesthouse.com] on thesmartesthouse.com

The price is less compared to the normal price and this product has a better design compared to similar products that sell between $59.99 to $135 and works on any quarter-turn ball valve up to 1-1/2" in size

They win for having the most expensive shipping on the internet. Would love just the valve, as I already have the leak sensors which were less than half the price of even the discounted sensor here.

OK thanks, I didn't even go as far to check shipping. Also in Illinois so there is tax. Ended up adding the siren and the shut off valve to the cart and got it for about $105 after tax and free shipping.

They have some sort of free shipping threshold, as I added a mouser and it was also discounted and shipped free.

When the water sensor detects a leak, it sends a signal to the z-wave hub which sends a signal to shutoff the valve. So a hub is needed for the valve to turn off

There is a video on the product page itself
