Ok, so I used the card coupon at 8:01 AM EST in NJ. I bought three $.50 cards and the coupon took off $10,000, so I bought a gift card. HTH!
So anyway, I can't believe that I spent about 4 hours paying in an free online poker tournament to win $4.47. At 2 AM I said f-this!
And finally, here's to four (or eight) years of positive change

Anyways. I am having my first yard sale with all my loot. It is this Saturday and I was wondering if any of you pros had some advice for me! I already listed it on craigslist and the local classifieds but was wondering about signage and pricing...basically anything to lure em in! My town is pretty cash strapped so I thought close to the holidays would be good. I have tons of brand new toys and baby stuff..plus all the regular stuff..Anything is helpful..I am a total noob!
1- i try to put as much as possible on tables or at least elevate it off the ground. when i run out of tables i put stuff on top of my sterilite and rubbermaid bins. i hang clothes on dry cleaner hangers and invested in the cheapest clothing rack i could find. last yr my cousin used 2 ladders and a pole. this yr i put the price sticker on the paper on the hanger right above the neckline. i also safety pin little pieces of paper w/ the price to curtains and clothing.
2- i put price stickers on as much as possible. i hate stores and yard sales where i cannot figure out the price of things w/o constantly asking somebody and wasting alot of time. one of the reasons i don't do walmart. it's alot of effort but i definitely get more sales.
3- i charge approx half the shelf price for new items and 25pct for used items in excellent condition. but it will range all the way down to 90pct off what i originally paid. sometimes even less depending on the condition. it's amazing what people will buy!
4- i like charging $4 and $8 for items b/c in my area, people are more willing to pay that without haggling and i think i end up selling more stuff and making more money. if i price things for $5 and $10 they want to pay $3 and $5 and then when i try to negotiate $4 and $8 they won't buy it. at 4 and 8, many times they buy without haggling at all.
5- if you ever sell stuff for other people, never tell them how much you sell it for. they will be very unhappy and less likely to give stuff up. just give them the cash. they will be very happy b/c it's like found money. you see it on *clean house* on the style channel all the time. the bigger your yard sale is, the better. more stuff means people will stop and take a look. even i have driven by and if you only have one table of stuff i don't stop.
6- i try to make everything as clean and neat as possible and well organized. that means wiping things down, using windex and running things thru the dishwasher. i have a friend who used to be an ebay power seller and he used very dilute fantastik or something like that. i can also charge more money for my stuff.
7- it's better to take decorative items like picture frames, crystal and silver out of the box so that people can see it and touch it. i put the box right next to it. they are going to take it out of the box anyway. if it's in the box it doesn't move. out of the box, most of it sells.
8- i've been able to sell health and beauty items like facial scrub, gold bond powder, etc that have been used. i just charge pocket change, like 10-25cents. better all around than just throwing it in the garbage.
9- i have a plastic bin in the closet and throughout the year, whenever i decide i no longer want something, it goes in the bin until the yard sale. i've even sold the plastic boxes that fancy chocolate comes in for 10cents, dvd holders, etc.
10- i always put *no early birds* in my classifieds. around here they come while you are trying to set up and try to really knock you down on stuff you haven't priced yet b/c you just want to get rid of them b/c you are rushing to set up. i very firmly tell them i'll put it aside and they can come back later when i'm all set up. it happens w/o fail every year.
11- people are very sneaky. be careful when you are selling multiples of any item. they will hold an item up and ask if they can have it for a lower price. you say yes and then they buy all of them. i've even had a very good friend do this! now i just say *if you buy alot of stuff i'll give you some discount*. and then i'll round down a little at the end when everything is totalled. it usually ends up being less than 10pct. if it's under $10 sometimes i'll knock off the change w/o asking. my bff thinks i'm very tough about it but i know i already have good prices and many times somebody else will come along and buy it w/o all the angst. if people are nice, i'm nice to them. if you give me a hard time and ask for outrageous discounts, i don't want you to have it. their comes a point where i can just donate it and get more money from the tax writeoff w/o all the hassle you are giving me.
12- people will pick thru everything you have laying around....even if you are not selling it. this yr somebody wanted to buy my cellphone! i think the oddest thing is that every yr w/o fail somebody asks if i'm selling my 20 gal plastic storage bins. no, i'm using them to carry the sales items around!
13- i'm prepared w/ used grocery bags for people take their stuff away. they are always happy about that.
14- have some sandwiches or other easy to eat food premade the nite b4.
15- every yr i put up 6 big posterboards on the utility poles w/ arrows leading to my house at least 2 days in advance. if you put them up too early, some kids will rip them down b4 the sale, so usually tuesday or wednesday. i make sure the lettering is big enough that it's legible when driving 35miles/hr. bigger in block letters is better. if you cannot read it yourself, than nobody else can either. use key words like *big* or *multi-family* and *toys*. every yr at least half the sales come from the posters. this yr it was all of it b/c i left the craigs listing to my neighbor and she posted very late the nite b4. we learned from that mistake! we didn't put a classified in the paper this yr and that was a mistake also. she thought it was too expensive but we learned you probably make back 4-10 times what you spent on the ad.
i've gotten many compliments and many people have said i have good prices. i don't think i've ever had somebody say i'm charging too much. i sell w/ very little haggling and very little stress. i think i charge very fair prices w/o giving it away. i'm very honest about everything. i don't lie to sell anything. many of my customers are my neighbors and i have repeat customers too. people will call their friends to come or bring their friends and relatives back w/ them.
i've also found that friday is also a very good day for yard sales. i do from 12-6 and get all the moms sans kids and working people on lunch break and then all the kids after school. last yr i made more money than saturday. if i could find somebody to help me, i would try thursday too. sunday in my neighborhood is awful.
i've found that every neighborhood is different. clothing doesn't sell in my area but last yr i took some stuff up to my cousin's yard sale 50 minutes away and she did very well w/ clothing. any educational toys doesn't do well here either. preschool toys and books do pretty well and anything related to babies. it's good to talk to people to find out what they are looking for for future sales.
hth and good luck!

I actually just laughed out loud, by myself (well, the cats are here, eating their breakfast
So, I spent all morning yesterday back at the hospital (planned this time). My "pee" test
So they are NOT putting me on bedrest, I CAN go ahead and go on the trip DH and I set up for next week (to Scotland and Ireland
I'm grateful that it doesn't look like I have pre-eclampsia, but now my pregnancy has gone from simple to complicated. I know it could be way, way worse-- but I'm a worrier by nature and was really hoping they'd just say, "Oh, sorry. It was all a stupid mistake."
it's amazing what people will buy!
