4 digits would be better as it then becomes more likely you'd notice something misplaced or catch someone running from the location when u suddenly came home.

thus the potential combinations are 000 (or 111) through 999
as you know, there are only 999 permutations of X X X (or i think 1,0999 if including zeroes) since it is merely a count of all the numbers
am i wrong or is there uncertainty about the type of lock this has?
edit: if 000 is included, i think the permutations are actually just 1,000 as 999 assumes zeroes already except for 000 itself.
