$3 is how much something like this is worth, unless the person receiving it has special needs, spend a little more and get something decent

This is perfect for any child or adult. It's a set of crayons and markers. If you put the cap on it won't dry out, if you keep the lead sharp it will write! Does it look cheap ,yes...does it do what it's designed to do , yes. Is it worth $3...yes!
Did I buy it, NO!!
JK it's $3 of course I bought it!

Let's not go crazy... Wink

In terms of what one would normally have to pay for them, $3 is a great price for a set like this and they're arguably "perfect" for the nursery-school-to-second-grade age range, but no more than a very short-term "disposable" set for kids between about 8 and 10-11 (or maybe 12 if the kid is desperately bored...) And for that matter, for a kid older than 8 who's "really" into drawing, etc. (and/or has any real talent) these are pretty crappy sets and you can do usefully better for not a whole lot of money (though you'll have to reach into the low double digits.)

It's a little early to be thinking about this, but I might grab a couple to add to other things for "Toys for Tots" presents for very little kids, since I think they would find the sheer number of pieces cool, and since buying "good" art supplies for the average 4-7 year old is a total waste anyway, since it's just the nature of such little beasts that they're gonna lose 'em and/or destroy 'em in short order no matter what... This way, no one has to let that bother them at all...
