General rule of thumb is to not use a "server" also as a PC because of the risk of doing "PC things" can (like any PC) cause a freeze, or reboot or other issues which could cause loss of data, etc. Browsing by an end-user can make your server more susceptible to malware, too. So in general, I don't recommend using a server as a workstation/PC also.

Also, maybe I didn't understand you correctly, but you would still install QB on the server, but just the database manager portion, so that the other users can use it in multi-user mode. You would keep your company files on the server, correct?

Mine has been solid. I added an aftermarket Intel raid controller and an SSD as the main disk and an Intel dual port NIC for VMs.

I want to add another 8gb of memory but it's expensive.

Depends on what you plan on using it for. ECC (error correcting) RAM is critical for situations where data reliability is of utmost importance and corruption cannot be tolerated. In other words, it is rare that a person running a server out of their home needs ECC.

you don't need ECC RAM for a home server, ignore the guy you quoted, you'll be perfectly fine. you may end up needing more RAM though, depending on what you're doing beyond FreePBX, but 8GB is a good start...

This will be a little overkill for my purposes but I just plan on using it for a standalone FreePBX box for under 20 users. 8GB should be plenty. Thanks for the response.

Stupid question, if installing windows 10 on this (turn into a cheap quickbooks/file server), would you use 32 or 64 bit version? Or does it matter? I figure this is built better than a normal desktop to use as a small server. 99% of the activity will; be for shared quickbooks usage (2 or 3 users max at a time). Thanks!

It makes an excellent, yet inexpensive, desktop PC. Lots of USB ports, display port out and good room for storage.

You would want 64-bit version of Windows to utilize more than 3GB of RAM.

So this would be used as a file server for about 4-5 users, and also host quickbook database. I was also thinking that a user could use it as a normal desktop and have it running as a server at the same time. If they are only using it for quickbooks and web surfing, could a user use this as a desktop at the same time it is running as a server? That way, they could use that quickbooks install so that the quickbooks database could be used in multi user mode. Otherwise, if it is just a server PC, then it would not have the full quickbooks installed, and therefore not be used in multi user mode.
