But other than that, no one at home has complained about the new setup. They complained more when there was no AP and signal quality was bad. The transfer between APs is immediate.
When I set it up, I made a note of the MAC address on the router that was going to be turned into an AP. Hooked up the secondary router to the main via LAN port.
Went into Administration> System Mode and chose AP Mode (on that 2nd router). I put in the same wireless SSID and password as main router.
On the main router, went to LAN> DHCP Server and enabled a manually assigned IP address.
Since the main router in my home is 10.0.0.1. the AP was set to 10.0.0.2
Made sure to have DHCP leases start from 10.0.0.4 (never know if I might need the 3 spot).
Reboot AP twice.
Once that simple part was done, now I needed to set the Roaming Assistant on. So a measuring of the signal was next.
I used a phone app instead of a computer program, given that computers have a better wireless antenna as where mobile devices struggle more. Though if it's mainly computers in your home, you can use iSSIDer for Windows or NetSpot for macOS
On Android I used "Wifi Analyzer" by Farpoc, there is also a adfree version at no cost by another developer (VREM), app is "WiFiAnalyzer".
I opted for the Farpoc version because it clusters my SSIDs neatly but both apps are nearly identical with the same features.
There was no iOS app that I could find for free.
So... I stood around but not too near where the router is located (but FAR enough from the AP), checked the dBm level of the AP via the app. It was hovering around -64 which in my case was too low (lower means better signal strength) given that I would have some instability if it went upwards to or past -70s if I walked farther away and the I would still be "chained" to the AP. And no one wants to be connected to some fluctuating signal.
I lowered the Power Transmit under Wireless> Professional and kept playing with it until I got something like -78 dBm which is bad and that's what I wanted.
Now that I had found that, in the same Professional tab, enable Roaming Assistant, the default and lowest setting is -70 dBm
You will need to to do the power transmit and roaming assist for both 2.4 GHz and 5Ghz. Once set, do this procedure for the AP.
If you are still having issues with the signal being too high, you can turn the antennas around and lower them one level down and play again with the transmit power.
Just to note, you can use the WAN port on the Access Point, it will act as a spare LAN port if you need it.
Don't manually set the wireless channels on the AP, you don't want interference with the Router. And you can have both devices on the same floor, I just chose to have it on separate floors is all.
Attached is an image, obviously it is not to scale, it's just for reference so you get an idea,

Your best bet is to ditch them both and get equipment that is designed to work together and seamlessly hand off clients between APs when better signal is available in other areas. You can do this with almost any enterprise grade equipment using 802.11r features (the cheapest probably being Ubiquiti UniFi APs), but the easiest way to go is to use one of the many multi-router WiFi mesh systems out now (Amplifi HD, Orbi, Eero, etc).
