Product Ratings
Product Description
  • Deception: Murder in Hong Kong is a game of deduction and deception for 4-12 players that plays in about 20 minutes.
  • Players take on the roles of investigators attempting to solve a murder case – but there's a twist. The killer is one of the investigators! Each player's role and team are randomly assigned at the start of play and include the unique roles of Forensic Scientist, Witness, Investigator, Murderer, and Accomplice. While the Investigators attempt to deduce the truth, the murderer's team must deceive and mislead. This is a battle of wits!
Price Research
  • The cheapest alternative to Amazon that has this game in stock is NobleKnight.com [nobleknight.com], which has this board game for $34.95 plus $9.95 shipping.
  • FunAgain.com [funagain.com] has this game as "temporarily out of stock" for $31.99 plus $9 shipping.
  • A few online retailers have it listed at $31.99 plus ~$10 shipping fees, but they are out of stock. Per my tracking, the last few times the game returned to stock, the prices increased to $34.99 or more, plus shipping.
Enjoy!

I picked this up in a recent sale and it's a fun play. Kind of a combination of Codenames and bluffing games.

Very entertaining with any size group (but larger ones are better.)

Thanks for your input!

This is the board game that seems to hit every single check mark for me in terms of what I like about board games:
  • easy to learn (very low complexity rating)
  • fast-paced (no down times)
  • short games (20 minutes)
  • many can play (4 to 12 players)
  • replayability
  • thematic, with storytelling
I have been eyeing this game for several months and this is the lowest price I have found. I would have purchased it, but a friend just told me he has a copy of it, so I'm going to try it out soon before purchasing.

I'd say you need at least 6 players, in my opinion. One person will be running the game so it's really only 5 doing the social deduction part.

This is about the same price as most OLGSs, but they usually charge shipping unless you are placing a bigger order. Also, they all seem to be out of stock.

I've had this game been a huge success usually. It flopped with my one group for some reason, even though they love Avalon, BSG, Secret Hitler, etc.

Yeah, BoardGameGeek.com shows that it's best with 7 to 8 players. I've seen some online reviews that stated it's not too bad with 5 players, which is pretty rare because most games of this type require many more players.

Thanks for pointing this out. It led me to add a Price Research section in the original post above.

Note: OLGS = Online Local Game Stores, as in local game stores that have an online presence.

That is odd that it would fail with a Secret Hitler group. The one thing that this game does not have is a lot of laughs. Secret Hitler is usually an incredibly fun time with my group, but this game gets people to be a good deal more serious.

You're probably right about the 6 people though, that has been our starting point when playing it, but the game becomes a good deal more challenging as you add more people.

Do you play a lot of board games? I'm always interested in recommendations - even if I did just spend a bit over $100 last week at CoolStuffInc.com.

I own this game and recommend it (in my top 5 games that I own). I've played it with 4 and with 6 (6 adds in accomplice and witness roles). So while I can't speak to how it plays with bigger groups it's yet to be a disappointment when I bring it to the table and one that I see having great replay-ability with so many cards in the game and different experiences playing with different people.

If you're on the fence Sam and Zee from Dice Tower both rated it their #1 Hidden Role/Social Deduction game in a top 10 list from not to long ago and this is a good price!

I own this game. It's a lot of fun. It has that traitor element except the pressure on the traitor is greatly reduced compared to other games like the Resistance line. People in my group often dread being the traitor so the less pressure on the traitor in this one really works well for us. I play and own a lot of board games, so an added plus is this s a modern style, genre game which is important to some, obviously not me, who doesn't care for fantasy or fantastical elements.

The quality of components is also very good. It scales well too.

Even though it seems that you prefer short and simple, do you also like in-depth and/or longer games?

Thanks for letting me know. I have updated the original post with this information. It was ~$36 on Walmart.com this morning when I checked before posting this thread.

I do. I prefer board games to stay under 2 hours, primarily because there is sometimes one person or two people - not always me - who get bored of the game partway through, and then he or she will just have to sit through to the end.

This is more than you asked for, but the following is a listing of my board and social game rankings, with Tier One being my favorites and Tier Five being my least favorites; the games in each tier are listed alphabetically.

First Tier
  • Guillotine
  • Jackbox Games: Drawful 2
  • King of Tokyo
  • Lords of Waterdeep: A Dungeons & Dragons Board Game
  • Mafia
  • Salad Bowl
  • Ticket to Ride
Second Tier
  • Acquire
  • Charades
  • Codenames
  • Cranium
  • Dead of Winter
  • Deluxe Pit
  • Dominion
  • Epic Spell Wars of The Battle Wizards: Duel at Mt. Skullzfyre
  • For Sale
  • Ingenious
  • Jackbox Games: Drawful
  • Jackbox Games: Trivia Murder Party
  • Ricochet Robots
  • Saboteur
  • Sheriff of Nottingham
  • Sushi Go Party!
  • Taboo
  • The Resistance
  • The Resistance: Avalon
Third Tier
  • Betrayal at House on the Hill
  • Coup
  • Jackbox Games: Guesspionage
  • Munchkin
  • Scattergories
  • Set
  • Shadow Hunters
  • Small World
  • Sushi Go!
  • Wits & Wagers
  • Zombicide
Fourth Tier
  • Carcassonne
  • Catan: Cities & Knights
  • Exploding Kittens
  • Jackbox Games: Quiplash 2
  • Star Fluxx
Fifth Tier
  • A Game of Thrones: The Board Game
  • Bang!
  • Cards Against Humanity
  • Jackbox Games: Earwax
  • Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game
  • Settlers of Catan
