Throw these bits [amazon.com] in there for $30 more, and you got yourself a 920 piece set.

A bag of zip ties and box of washers to push it over 1000!

I'd consider this a 184 piece set after subtracting 96 screwdriver bits and 40 hex keys. Seems like a decent set of sockets (the hex sockets might not be super useful). If you have nothing else, you'd need to get more wrenches.

Sears and Craftsman customer service are worthless nowadays. I bought a Craftsman shop vac in which the filter nut was cross threaded from the factory. All I wanted was a replacement nut (a readily available part), but they passed me around like 4 times and just told me to ship the whole thing back, which would be a big waste of time and money. It's all outsourced to foreign countries and they just follow scripts. They don't actually use problem solving skills.

These sets are getting ridiculous with useless tools that bump up the tool count which is purely marketing. Who needs all those sockets? Who needs all those screwdriver bits? I'd like to see a kit with just wrenches, screwdrivers and pliers of all types. Might be tempted to buy that one.

So true, a big part of the reason no one buys from Sears anymore...sad.

Remember Sears sold the Craftsman name and I'm sure they will be changing returns. Better to go with Husky from home depot.

Honestly I don't think this set is as bad or as useless as everyone is saying. I picked up a set similar to this around ten years ago and have used the majority of the tools in it at one point or another amidst many, many home car projects and it has served me well.

The bits are used rarely, but are used.

The 12 point sockets are used in some deeper engine work where actually 12 point head bolts are installed. Also, they're a nice backup if I lose a 6 pointer.

The smaller set looks like a better value because the bigger appears to only add bits - I get that - but the smaller set is decent. Also I like how the box has a place for each of the tools to go. My box just came with drawers and tools that slide around in the box - this is much nicer to keep organized!

Also - what are you guys expecting for this price range? lol. The smaller one is a good value starter set which i believe is exactly what these are intended for.

Craftsman used to be good.... But holy cow on those markups! Some of the items would be up to 8-9 times their original cost.

It does look like even the smaller set comes with fewer wrenches and more bits than my decade old set did but I think it's almost the same otherwise. Can't say for sure

I have the 254 piece Craftsman set ($160). It comes with better ratchets and a complete 1/4" and 3/8" socket set without gaps. It has limited 1/2" sockets, which works for me since I already have complete 1/2" impact rated sets from Harbor Freight.

I bought the 58 piece yesterday as a gift. Regularly 50, on sale for 25, and they gave me 25 in freecash. Literally paid 6.25 for shipping and tax for it. Some decent sales there right now.

I used to buy one of these tool sets. For sockets, I use metric sizes only. Standard sizes stay unused. I now keep a tiny tool box with duplicates of metric sizes, allen wrenches, hex keys, etc., enough to fix or tear down a car. I think it is better to buy what you need instead of what you think you need.
