I saw many thumbs up on the HP OMEN Desktop: i5-7400, 1TB HDD, GTX 1060 + HP Mixed Reality Best Buy bundle, but that deal is dead.

This HP Pavilion Power 580-023w Gaming Tower, Intel Core i5-7400, NVIDIA GTX 1060 3GB Graphics, 8 GB Memory, 1TB Hard Drive, Windows 10 from Walmart has very similar specs if not exact same just different brand, doesn't include VR system, but its priced cheaper than the hp vr bundle.

Expanding it-

It has ONE open SATA slot on the board. And a mounting spot for ONE hard drive or SSD. You will need your own SATA cable.

The M2 slot is A-Key, for wifi, not an SSD.

The GTX 1060's used in these units may have Samsung memory. Seeing 24.6 Mh/s mining Eth with 1000 Mhz( EEK!) mem OC + dual mining Sia at 246 Mh/s.

13 yr old.. Yes. Honestly nothing beats building but $499 for a 1060, even 3gb, is good.
FYI this is a leftover from Black Friday and stock is plentiful based on brickseek. For those looking to get even more for their money but don't necessarily need the PC now keep a watch on these for prices to drop following their Chrismas season. It is a good starter gaming pc for sure.
This is just fine for 1080p gaming.

Just don't buy a 2k or 4k monitor.

Thanks! I know nothing about gaming computers, so is this a good gaming desktop for a soon to be 13 year old? Also, if I buy this, can I return it if I have the receipt and it's unopened?

This would probably be a good purchased depending on the type of gaming for your child. It's probably more than sufficient. It should play most modern games at fairly respectable frame rates and older games very well. I believe it is VR ready but will be the best performing machine in that regard. The Walmarts around me have a bunch and I'm hoping for the price to drop some more. That said, I still bought one in case they don't get cleared out at a lower price because I do believe this is a good deal for what you get. This may struggle a little bit with 4K gaming.

Do you guys think the trend of smaller form/case is going to continue for desktop? ie. only 2.5 optical drive in front.

I don't know about you guys but I want to have some customization with 5.25 bay and a few pci express slots. This one have neither.

I am coming from an older PC (motherboard dying) that already has a working GTX 970 and HDD+SSD.

In that case, would it be possible to buy this deal, sell the new GTX 1060 and new HDD for $100-$120 and put in my GTX 970?
