SHIPPING UPDATE: I contacted Spy Tek because the USPS tracking info shows that as of Wednesday afternoon the order I placed over the weekend is still in packaging. The rep said the dash cam shipped on Monday 12/18. He provided a link for a DHL Ecommerce tracking site that is different from DHL's standard tracking site. (My tracking number shows as unknown on DHL's regular site.)

If you'd like to track your package you can do so at this link:

This unit ships with a cigarette lighter adapter which is just fine for the vast majority of users. Some may wish to hardwire it, (nowhere near the 99.9% someone claimed) but a kit is NOT NECESSARY to install and use this camera. If you decide you want to hardwire, additional hardware is required, and no surprise, that costs extra.

If you hardwire any camera to unswitched 12V you must make sure you add a low voltage shut off function to prevent your car battery from going dead. Some more expensive cameras have this built in, but most (including this one) do not. The kits below have a low voltage shut off function:

$13 with fuse tap:

$10 without fuse tap - comes with inline fuse:

How is the video quality on this? Is there a way to select different quality levels to get more recording time on a chip?

I'd like to find one with a built-in battery.

Dash cam batteries in even moderately hot climates do not fare well. They tend to expand and go bad quickly if you leave your dash cam in the car.

Me too but nowadays they don't include that, instead they throw a small capacitor in there. People claim it's due to heat, battery wear, etcc etc.. which I don't really buy. They can easily put a high quality battery and it wouldn't die or swell etc, like cellphones. It's not that hard.

To get power to this while parked, you need to hardwire to your car using fusebox which is also risky if this thing gets stuck running it will drain your battery, then you need to add another gizmo in between to prevent drain, another hassle, another wire to deal with..

An idea

On 100F day, the interior of a car reaches 150F easily - http://enerjazz.com/data/cartemp/ . Leave a cell phone exposed to sunlight for about 8 hours and let's see how long it lasts.

added wiki comment about install being ridiculous due to the usb mini not being supported by mirrortap and no kit included to tap into fuse box.

Quality is good 1440 @30fps or 1080 @ 60fps.

Many other choices on dash cam functionality in the menu options.
