I used Priceline to book hotels frequently, especially their express deals, because let's face it, who doesn't love to save money. I have never had a problem with it until recently. For those of you who are not aware of Express Deals, it's a system where I book a mystery hotel for increased savings and once you lock into a hotel in their terms of service, it is non-cancelable and non-transferrable. I used the feature and there was an express deal that said save 78%, not up to 78%, just flat out save 78% with the price of the hotel being $63 per night, which should have put the hotel in the $280-$290 range. To my dismay, I ended up with a hotel room when I looked up the pictures on travelocity or some other travel website, the room didn't even have a flat screen TV. This is 2017, some motels probably even have flat screen TVs. This did not look like a hotel that would be $280 per night and did not translate into the 78% savings I saw on the screen. I then go back and try to re-book the same express deal to see what happened. This time, under closer inspection, I noticed once I clicked on the express deal, on the next page, in the corner of the picture it changes to save 20%.

Of course I was upset by this finding, so I tried to cancel, but they wouldn't because of their terms of agreement or whatever. I scoured the internet and found an answer.

According to section 4, Category C, subsection 2C.
"We or the applicable hotel may, on an exception basis and at the request of the hotel guest, waive one or more of the restrictions after the hotel room has been booked. We may, in our discretion, impose additional obligations and/or fees in connection with any such waiver. You agree that if your booking is successful, priceline.com will confirm the reservation and charge the entire amount of the stay, including applicable Taxes and Fees (as described below) disclosed to you before booking, to your method of payment. The price listed is per night and does not include priceline.com's charge to you for Taxes and Fees."

Therefore, you call the hotel and ask them if they are ok with canceling it. More then likely they will be. At which point, you have Priceline call them and cancel it. It worked for me.

Of course you can just call your credit card to try and get a charge back, but there's hope for those people

TLDR: Priceline express deal says save 78% savings with cost of hotel being $63 per night. Click on said deal, changes to save 20%. Pissed off, found a way to cancel.
1) Call hotel you received from priceline
2) Ask them to cancel
3) If they agree, call priceline to inform them of this, and ask them to call to cancel. If they refuse, refer to above.
4) Enjoy your refund!

Amazing. Hardest part was explaining to the hotel what they had to do. Thanks OP!

I found this thread and was relieved that I should be able to cancel, but surprisingly I had a much smoother experience. I called the hotel first (before finding this thread) and asked about cancelling or changing the date since I accidentally booked the wrong date. Totally my fault.

The hotel said they can't change anything since it's a third party Yada yada yada, so as I'm waiting to chat with a Priceline rep I find this thread and now I'm all ready to go through the process. When I get a rep on the chat I explained I accidentally booked the wrong date and asked if it could be moved forward 1 week, he said no, the only option is to cancel. I was like, ok can we cancel, he said hold on, let me check with the hotel, he called, I'm guessing they were OK with it and I got it cancelled over chat without technically calling the hotel first. There is the chance that the same lady answered and remembered me calling in about a Priceline booking, but either way you can get out of express bookings!

Figured I would give this a shot and it took about 10 min to get to someone, but after about 10 messages back and forth, the support agent called the hotel and was able to get it cancelled. Applause

Thank you so much for this tip! I contacted priceline and gave them the section, subsection ect of terms of agreement and they did say I did need to contact hotel. WHen I contacted hotel to get approval to cancel express deal they said priceline could have contacted them directly but priceline refused to do so for me. I called priceline back and they contacted hotel to confirm they would cancel. I now have confirmation of cancellation email from priceline stating money would be refunded! Priceline is shady-one worker will tell you no when another will say yes. Just be diligent and don't give up!

Thanks so much for this post! We had a change of plans so I called the hotel and they were super nice about it. Called Priceline who then confirmed with the hotel and will be refunding my payment. Less than 10 minutes on the phone total and got my $75 back!

I followed the steps and it worked. The hotel lady on the phone was so nice and cancelled it directly. I used priceline chat to confirm the cancellation and got full refund. Thanks so much for this post and now I feel so happy for my money back.

THANK YOU, SD!!!!

Priceline did do a bait and switch on me w/ a hotel in Downtown LA.
They lured me in w/ a newer hipster hotel being booked through express deal and stuck me with an older hotel that was on the other side of DT LA.
I called the hotel as you all mentioned and the hotel was definitely more accommodating than the rep at Priceline. After the reservations person approved the cancellation, I contacted PL again w/ a different rep. Now this guy Mark was so helpful. He called the hotel and verified my cancellation request, sent me a confirmation of cancellation while I was on the phone w/ him.

Lesson learned is....just don't do bookings via express deals on PL. It is a total scam.

And my fellow SD'ers...you guys are awesome!

They said they will not be able to cancel the reservation but could modify it and they would be charging priceline.

THIS WORKS! I used the Name Your Own Price and was given a very low-quality, dirty hotel that did not deserve the star-rating it had. Called both Priceline and the hotel and neither were willing or able to do anything about the reservation. Found this thread, called the hotel and explained the situation, got permission to cancel, and gave the rep my name. Called Priceline, told them I already got permission to cancel from the hotel. Priceline put me on hold for 5 minutes to call the hotel to confirm and gave me a full refund. Thanks so much!

Just tried this today. Called the hotel, they were very accommodating. Went into Priceline CHAT (which I like more than calling), and they were able to cancel the reservation for me within 5 minutes. Thank you so much for the tips!

This thread was LITERALLY a life saver .. Thank you thank you thank you so much! I booked the "pricebreakers" deal and was very unhappy with the choice I was given. I came across this thread and I attempted to call Priceline and use the policy they stated they couldn't cancel. I tried to call the hotel and the hotel said I had to call Priceline so I called Priceline again and still was told it couldn't be cancelled. So I just let a few hours passed and when I got home I used the chat and told them I really need to cancel I asked them to call the hotel and if they call the hotel would cancel. Next thing you know they chatted me back and said they got permission from the hotel to cancel and the reservation was cancelled and I will receive a full refund! So keep trying .. stay persistent!

I had an express deal which is nonrefundable and I understood the terms when booking but needed to cancel. I called the hotel and wouldn't do it. They told me I have to talk to priceline. I did it through the priceline chat and they contacted the hotel on my behalf and canceled without any additional fees. Be persistent!

Nonetheless, thanks for posting this.

No Refund, but scored 12 month credit on United Airlines ticket by calling Priceline Customer Service (800 774-2354) 72 hours before departure. Rep placed on hold several minutes, checked w/ United, came back and arranged the credit due to COVID-19 policy change.
