Can you use these to unlock phones say from like att,T-Mobile, when you have to put in another SIM card first to unlock? Doesn't seem to be the right kind not sure if service provider will even shop up

Agreed, Tracfone isn't a good deal compared to Redpocket, Tello, Ting, or Mintsim. However, TotalWireless and SimpleMobile are still competitive.

Got three of them, I feel like I give pennies away so I might as well buy something with them!

Do these things work when a carrier says we need to have a ported number from a competing brand to get a better deal?

What type of usage pattern are you comparing? I have generally low usage with sporadic high usage periods, and the rollover benefit of Tracfone works well for me. Most of the plans are best for regular usage patterns, and the autoadjusting Tello/Ting are more costly for me when I've made comparisons. YMMV.
