is there any reason to buy this vs using credit karma's free tax return thing? honest question here not trying to bash it, just wondering if it is worth buying the software vs using the free option
My big gripe with the online tax software I've used is that they typically do not allow downloading of the data to transfer to different software. To me, that is a deal breaker, because it traps me to that one company's systems. Plus, I am forced to trust them with my data in their cloud. I've used TurboTax and H&R Block software over the years. Both have "quirks." One ongoing complaint I have with both is that transferring the Federal data to the PA tax return leaves HUGE manual gaps for me to fill. I realize that PA, and maybe other states, have different definitions for some fields, such as deductible employee expenses, so automatic transfer may not be feasible. I'd prefer, though, that the software give me a list of "pending" or "missing" or "unallocated" income and expenses that I can see after the State transfer is done. EVERY year, I am stuck reading each and every section of the PA and FED tax returns, and manually identifying and reconciling issues. Still and all, better than the "free" online software, as far as I am concerned. Also, I used to go back and forth from TurboTax to H&R Block, based on cheapest software cost each year. What I discovered is that some important tax details, like deferred deductions, seemed to intermittently disappear during those transfers. Now, I stick with one brand.

H&R Block software has a glitch I can't update and terrible customer service when I called. I returned and buying TurboTax instead! Many years as a customer no more.

FWIW, when I saw the high prices for State eFiling years ago, I simply shifted to mailing in my State tax return.
To avoid that issue I'm using the H&R Block version that also includes free state filing. I'm paying a bit more than this posting but I also need the Small Business version so I can't take part in this deal anyway.

Not that I've found. I run credit karma and then do a different software to verify the correctness, and as long as I'm not missing something then I submit with CK. No reason to pay if you don't have to.

Isn't that incredible, though, that the States (most) encourage the slow, more laborious, administrative burden mailing process rather than online upload? Typical government
