It's really a replacement for things like enterprise in-memory databases. But it can also be used to cache HDDs (or NAND SSDs, though the performance gains are smaller). Some people use an SSD for programs, and a larger HDD for miscellaneous files. Recent driver updates allow you to use an Optane drive to cache secondary drive data, making your HDD "feel" more responsive, at least in reads.
