You did it wrong. And applying with your SSN had nothing to do with your decline. Don't pretend to have an elaborate business that you can't back up - even if you can stretch it to seem kinda plausible.

What you should have done (and could do in 30 days if you wish to reapply) is to simply apply as a "Sole Proprietor". From that point, pick a category/subcategory that makes sense for you, put minimal levels of income and years in business. I have gotten 3 Chase business cards doing exactly that (2 using my SSN, the 3rd with an EIN), as have a large number of other people - oddly enough, it is easier to get approved following those steps than for legitimate small business owners applying for their businesses.
That one has an annual fee and requires $5k spending from what I can see, but the CB and bonus amount are indeed better.
When I signed up years ago, basic Ebay sellers were viewed as a business. Today YMMV but I still have the card.

One thing to know, the buyer protections granted to customers of non-business VISA cards may not come with the business card. You may want to check carefully before using this card for higher risk purchases.

Sole proprietorship and my own SSN didn't work. I called and they asked for business.EIN + address proof. Today I got letter asking for same thing.

I filled exactly as suggested by others. Don't know what went wrong!
What did you list as your Legal Business Name?

Fyi.. I just applied last week and have a REAL business that currently doesnt have any income. I had proof of a DBA ( doing business as) and got denied. When I called to ask why, they said they cant provide this info but expect a mail stating the reason. I'm guess after all these "fake" business opening accounts Chase is becoming more strict.

what # did you call? I've never had the actual recon line be unable to give a reason (which I could then usually get them to reverse pretty easily)... but the normal chase customer service line would have no clue why you were rejected.

Origianlly did it online. Some error. Called. They said it's not complete. Went to the branch and provided all documents. Then called 2 days to see status, they said I was denied but cant access why and I needed to wait for the letter. Lame.

How do you find your account online? Do I need to make a separate business account first?
Yes you do. You can then link your consumer cards to your business dashboard (but not vice versa).

what did they ask?
I didn't speak with anyone, it's automated. Just punched in SSN and it said I had been approved.

FYI - I was denied a card for my ebay business because they said they required a utility bill or lease agreement with the business name on it.

You don't have any utility bills with your name on it?

No, I do not, because I am living out of my parents basement.

Did you use your first+last name as business name ("JOHN SMITH") or make something up?

I was approved today. Used my first and last name for business name. Thank you op and others that described the steps. My card is being expedited.

I got denied after calling in . They wanted either business tax forms or proof of incorporation of the business even though I listed it as a sole proprietorship. Technically I wasn't outright denied because she said I could call back within 30 days. I think the one thing I did wrong was perhaps I should have put my first and last name for the business name instead of my ebay account name. What they fail to understand is that sole proprietorships don't have the documents they are asking for.

Chase didn't fail to understand anything, it's your own fault that they're asking for documentation. You filled out the application incorrectly. It asks for the LEGAL name of your business. It's not that you "should have" put in your first and last name. As a sole proprietor with no DBA registered with your state, you MUST put in your first and last name..

I wish I knew to use my first and last name for the business name. Although I got approved for the ink preferred with my eBay account as the business name.
