Yes b/w and mono means that it is black and white. Color is usually denoted as color. Ink jets are always color. Also many laser printers which print in color will have a rainbow color sticker and they will have a much larger footprint than a black and white since it houses 1 cartridge vs 4.

Is there a cheap generic toner available for this printer? HP printers can only use HP expensive cartridges I thought. So the cost of toner might make this not so great a deal in the long term. Just my 2 cents worth.

Yes it does use a chip and yes the generics are more expensive than other lines. Brother is the cheapest in terms on ink costs but the Samsung Xpress is slightly more expensive on ink but it offers way better printing on graphics if that's important for you. I own a printer from all 3 of these lines and this is what I've found
