Several have asked about Solar for Home, although not what this product is for specifically. Here is a good Solar calculator: http://pvwatts.nrel.gov/pvwatts.php

Because of lower silicon purity, polycrystalline solar panels are not quite as efficient as monocrystalline solar panels.
Lower space-efficiency. You generally need to cover a larger surface to output the same electrical power as you would with a solar panel made of monocrystalline silicon.

Decent price, but I would recommend going with Monocrystalline panels.
Got the Renogy 100 watt Monocrystalline for $110 shipped from the last eBay 15% off sale.
It's not going to be cheap. Any decent inverter is going to be pure sine wave. Maybe something by Cotek or Samlex around 1500W. Probably $400-500. Stick with 24v or higher. And 4x deep cycle batteries such as golf cart or energy storage batteries will get you a nice budget but decent quality small off grid system.

Can anyone recommend a decent inverter? I wouldn't mind getting the detached garage on its own off-grid power with a small battery bank.

Why do the specs say 18 volts? and excuse my ignorance about these things, but do these hold a charge?

Depending on your needs the small size difference may not matter to you and these may work well for your needs! The reviews are very high for these panels. Unless you intend to cover your whole house with panels I wouldn't let the slight size stop you from getting these!

these are just solar panels that are designed to be hooked up to a solar controller and 12v batteries.

the controller needs more than 12v to charge standard 12v batteries (12v batterie are normally like ~14v fully charged anyways, so the output voltage of the solar panel should be higher)

I was planning to buy a few of these to charge my Goal zero yeti 1400. Any idea if this would be a good choice?

Really depends on what all you plan to run on the inverter all at one time as to your power needs. As someone else suggested getting a very expensive pure sine wave inverter may not be needed if all you are going to run is lights or a drill now and then. You can probably get by with less than $200 for the inverter once you figure out how much power you need. Reading the reviews will help you most of all once you decide on your needs!

These should work just fine if you are just charging up batteries and only need a few of them!
