HGST manufactures the most reliable hard drives by a wide margin. This is a good deal.

For reference, they are a subsidiary of Western Digital.

I don't think so. Maybe their enterprise grade drives are reliable but not consumer grade. 3 of 4 4TB NAS drives I put into my Synology went bad in first 6 months.
so your sample size is four?

My sample size is 12 total. Drives that went bad were purchased at once so I probably had bad luck and got drives from bad batch. But based on that I wouldn't say that they make most reliable drives in general. I also have 16 4TB WD purple drives that are 4 years old and one of them have over 700TB total of data written (other between 100 and 500TB) and all of them are still working flawlessly without even single bad sector. So I'm just saying that you can't just say that one manufacturer makes most reliable drives in general.

I see the Deskstar being the most common on sale. I'm planning on adding another hard drive for storage (already have 3 of various brands. WD, SG, etc) . Would you say the Deskstar series is good enough, or should I wait for Ultrastar to be on sale?

Not that I'm accusing anyone of anything, but I once watched someone "install" hard drives by jamming them forcefully into a caddy. Then, later I heard the same person complaining about how unreliable hard drives are.

I guess my point is that hard drives may be a lot more reliable than they appear, but they need proper handling from the factory up until they are installed in the user's machine. Any rough handling could damage them.

Fortunately, if they fail, they tend to fail quickly and under warranty. In those cases, RMA for a replacement. If it becomes consistent - multiple RMAs, then there is probably a structural issue, and I would start to question the brand. But, for drives bought and installed at the same time, I think there's many external factors which may influence their reliability.

I have a HGST drive in my server right now that's been powered on for more than 3 years, and has been going strong. Previously, it was a Toshiba that died less than a year in. Before that, it was a Seagate, which lasted 4.5 years. I do feel confident about HGST, given their backblaze stats.

in reality you can't say any of that with any real certainty based upon such small sample sizes. there are however people who compile such data to cross reference it with.

Great price. I picked up an 8TB a couple months ago and think I paid about $220. FYI, these drives are LOUD. No other complaints thus far.

I've got an UNRAID with all 5400 rpm drives for the low noise and temp. Will the 7200 rpm drive be much hotter and louder? Anyone know if my 5400 rpm drives will bottleneck speeds when I start streaming 4K remux films (assume the rest of my system has no bottlenecks)?
