We booked on Hotwire once and stayed at a nice place near the Pentagon for less than $100/night. Look for something with no cancellation fee and if a deal comes up, jump on it.
Priceline has several services. In one you don't know in advance what hotels you get.
This come through the other service which lists the regular price for hotels. It shows there are a number of hotels selling rooms at that time at reasonable prices. You can often find the same rates on the hotels web sites.
Definitely compare prices with the hotel brand website. We booked a room at Hilton for Philly Marathon through a 3rd party -- saved $100 per night -- but our room wasn't ready until just about the last second. For 3 nights stay, we saved $300 so the wait was worth it, but others had no problem and were probably in the same room type.
If the difference is just a few dollars, some hotels and airlines treat you differently. Decide if the difference is worth any hassle.

DC OFTEN has very reasonable hotel rooms when Congress isn't in session. The Beacon hotel has rooms for $127 a night during that period.
Priceline lists several hotels with rates below that for that period. It's selling the Mayflower for $119 a night.
