I believed so much so in the consistent major price drop being only done occasionally because of the sellers banked on people buying enough 1st party cartridges that I never considered there was another option.
Over a year or two, would use them till the provided tape cartridge ran out (I wonder if the included ones are smaller than the cartridges you buy, just like how most printers always come with a smaller cartridge than the replacement ones) and just use the latest SD thread to buy a new one for the usual $9.99.
The next time around, I actually went ahead and got this model, before the previous one ran out of tape, SPECIFICALLY because I saw the image of printed multicolored labels and assumed it did this out of the box, as I spent a total of 0 seconds thinking about (in some fairness to Brother) how improbable the logistics of a label maker being able to print in color but still be the same $9.99 as the previous model.
I was irritated mostly with myself upon getting this model and realizing it didn't print labels in several colors but still thought that the different colors would be more expensive than the apparent usefulness of the idea so much so that even though I was admittedly, for the first time, excited about a label maker, that I didn't check the price.
Never thought I'd be saying this but, thanks to cookies and Amazon's targeted ads, they recently made me aware of an entire world of 3rd party inexpensive replacement label cartridges.
I'd post a link to the ones I've used and liked except there's a lot of "shill" accusations being thrown around Slickdeals these days when a member encourages anyone to buy anything on Amazon... but I didn't write this to waste everyone's time so I'll give enough information that you'll can find it on your own IF YOU WANT TO, I HAVE NO CONNECTION TO THIS COMPANY... lol
The brand and Amazon seller is Anycolor and went for the 2 set combo of 6 colors (12 total). I can't tell you'll if they're the best deal out there but at less than $2 a piece, I was satisfied.
Good luck everyone.

Yup. I have a model or two older than this one and experience the same thing.
