I'm guessing as a method to see if they're filling up the tanks al the way....or if the poster to see if they need to get it refilled.

Exactly! Keep in mind a refill might only be 75% of capacity to allow for expansion, but this proves to be more helpful than just knocking on the rank. And for under $7? Great find by the OP.

Do these actually go up in price? I bought one a year or two ago for about the same price.

Anyway the product is solid. I weighed my bags before going to the airport and it was right on... we are talking within a pound compared to the airport scale.
