I just received an email that this app, usually $5, is free today until Sunday, September 30th. It's an educational game by The Usborne Foundation, using a game environment to teach phonics and reading. It is already free to play on a desktop, but it's worth the flawless touchscreen controls for toddlers/tiny hands.
Here is the (always) free desktop link to try it out:

Here are the links to the apps:
Download on iTunes
[apple.com]
Download on Google Play Store [google.com]
Download on Amazon
*There's nothing to buy, or any in-app purchases, once you own the game. No ads, either.
**I personally paid for this game for both Kindle and iOS (so, twice at full price) and it was worth it. I've bought it for other parents with kids at 2 years old and up.

The only thing that is wonky about the game (for us) is that the narrator speaks with a British accent. I sit with him when he plays and sometimes have to clarify how he has heard some words pronounced before.
Great game.
