It's finally happened. A branded, guaranteed warranty 2TB SSD finally broke the $300 barrier.
Real world speed comparing the two is minimal unless you are doing some major rendering or computing daily. You save a few minutes or an hr yearly but not enough to justify the price. Unless you purchased a mobo which supports nvme its useless and if you did you only have 1 slot from what ive seen meaning if you want more space your going sata anyway.
I have NVME capable slots on my Ryzen rig; I still think NVME is too expensive for what it offers, unless you have a specific use case (for example a scratch disk for 4K video in real time). For the average user, or even a gamer, a SATA SSD (which includes M.2 "stick" SSDs) are the sweet spot in terms of value.

SATA seems to be a bit outdated now with the prevalence of m.2 NVME drives. Would probably choose a 1tb NVME drive over this.

SATA is nowhere close to being outdated. Most MBs don't even have both slots at full bandwidth, and most don't have more than two M2 slots. And the price for high capacity is still expensive af.

How does this compare to the Micron 1100/Crucial MX300?

I agree, the only real benefit is it frees up SATA ports. I also have a Ryzen rig. 2700x. Samsung NVME 1TB is my Windows drive, Then I have two large capacity HHDs and two SSDs. I have a free NVME slot at lower bandwidth, which benches at 1500 compared to my boot drive which benches at 3500. I would only get another NVME stick if I run out of SATA ports.

Now I feel dumb for buying the Micron in May without a warranty. Hopefully it holds up.

I had the 1TB version of this SSD and a Microsoft Windows Update bricked the drive rendering it completely useless. I don't expect this type of thing happens often but I figured I let the buyers beware.

NVME drives do not free up sata ports on my board depending on the slot used it can disable up to 2 ports. https://imgur.com/a/H9xp62C
