Just read it via eBook from the local library (Overdrive). Even though it has a setting related to American Gods, both books are very much stand alone works, and honestly he writes well enough I don't think you gain that much reading either one before the other. American Gods is a very layered, at times surreal, story that can get a little heavy on the polemics. Anansi Boys seems more of the cadence/pacing of a traditional tale reset into the modern era versus a modern "novel." It has elements of a morality tale, and is humorous, snarky, and very, well, Neil Gamainesqe on his positive side, without as some of the tragic/bleak elements of American Gods. Light reading in a good way. If I couldn't get it for free, I'd definitely would not feel cheated if I had paid $2 for this.

I listened to the Audible version [audible.com] that was very well narrated and an enjoyable story. Highly recommended if you're a fan of Gaiman's work. It was more character driven than American Gods, which I count among my top ten favorite books of all time even though it reads like an obscure mythology textbook.
Conveniently, I didn't have to take notes to keep track of all the characters in Anansi Boys like I did with AG.
If we're lucky Neil Gaiman will make more spinoff books with characters from AG, maybe a buddy comedy with a handful of the Jesus incarnations' exploits. My vote for the next one is Bilquis, whom I thought was intriguing and could have been explored further.
There's a well-made American Gods series on Starz that I'd watch ahead of this if you prefer to have the characters' faces in your head beforehand.

I've listened to this on Audible and it's definitely worth $2. Gaiman delivers top notch storytelling as usual

Does Gaiman narrate the Audible version? I'm spoiled and the only audio books I can tolerate are his narrations.

Even though it is sold by HarperCollins Publishers, no rush credits would work for this purchase.

Agree with everyone here. I read the book and heard the audio version as well. Both are great.

I found it sort of dull and surprisingly predictable. Not nearly as interesting as American Gods. No sexcapades or morbid digressions. An okay read.

That being said, if you haven't read AG, read this first as this isn't nearly as far out.
