So the funny part of this is, my FIL told my husband about the cable one the other night. Hubby came home and showed it to me, and we died laughing. His dad said he was going to try it. We didn't tell him it was a joke and not to. Crylol

They're probably putting the shiny side of the discs out. It clearly won't work that way, as it causes inverse rectification.
