Soundbars usually have less HDMI inputs than a receiver. If you need more inputs, you may need an HDMI switcher, which will give you extra HDMI inputs.
Or, if your TV is newer, it usually has a function called ARC. This basically makes the HDMI connection between your TV and soundbar (soundbar needs to have ARC as well, which most soundbars do) two way. So your TV can feed sound to the soundbar through the HDMI connection while the soundbar feeds video to the TV through the same HDMI connection.
For example, in my living room, I have an LG SK9Y soundbar. The soundbar has two HDMI inputs. For input 2, I have my TV connected to my soundbar. For input 1, I have my 4k blu-ray player connected to the soundbar.
I have my apple 4K tv player, TIVO, and nintendo Wii connected to my TV.
When I watch tv using my apple 4K TV player, TIVO, or Wii, the soundbar is on Input 2. So the TV is feeding sound to the soundbar.
When I watch TV using my 4K blu-ray player, the soundbar is on Input 1. So the soundbar is feeding video to the TV since the 4K Blu-Ray player is feeding sound directly to the soundbar.
Please be aware that if you are feeding sound from the TV to the soundbar, it usually is compressed sound, so it may not be able to play Atmos.
For example, my TV is feeding sound from my Apple 4K TV to the soundbar. So I can't get Atmos sound. I would have to plug my Apple 4K TV to the HDMI 1 input of my soundbar and have the soundbar feed the video to my TV. That way I get Atmos sound since the Apple TV is feeding sound directly to the soundbar.

No preamps out except for subs?
Zone 2 is line out for analog only and not digital content.
TIA

685 has slightly lower THD (harmonic dissonance)
685 has alexa support for changing volume etc (You can do this for 683 via Harmony skill if you have it)
Can't see any other major differences

The other points look to be correct to me, apologies I'm not looking for those features myself so I didn't look in detail
