I went with the Essentials bundle instead of the materials bundle...Hopefully that wasn't dumb but I think she'll need the knives and matts more than the material.

Does anyone have any alternatives to avoid getting locked in to this company again? perhaps something that uses open source software?

Are you buying the $9.99 subscription first?
My concerns are with the "hidden costs". I see that there's a $10/month membership, but it supposedly gives you access to some number of images from them. $10/month isn't a big deal if it adds value. I worry, though, that she's going to find all sorts of things that are extra-cost.
Anyway, I don't think my wife plans to use it for anything fabric-related, so is there any other advantage to getting a Cricut Maker vs the Cricut Air 2?

Here's an article that goes more into detail regarding the Cricut Access membership if you're interested! https://www.clarksconde
Good luck and I hope that helps you all make the best decision for you.

I think for my initial intentions I'll just be making smaller vinyl cuts (using for metal etching on stainless tumblers and such) but i'm sure my kids will want shirts and I could see it growing. I've looked at reviews and comparisons and they aren't too convincing one way or the other. some of the advanced cutting blades seem cool, but not sure what they run (a quick google search could tell me) or how much more useful they are than the non-fancypants blades. I'd love to get opinions from owners. Thanks
