are you talking about the freezing issue? seems it was a driver issue with the AMD sata controller and using the standard Microsoft generic driver fixes the issue..

I read there was a work around but the drive wouldnt work at full speeds. I just dont want to do all that work only to sacrifice speed since i already have a ssd as my main hard drive.

Yes it will, but depending on which exact iMac model you have it will be either be pretty simple or more involved. Check online to see the steps involved in swapping the drive.
