I use this router with firmware it shipped with. Seems good enough for me and didn't bother trying to update.

I want another but I have FiOS and I tried one with the Ethernet direct from outside into the TMobile and it doesn't handle as fast of a speed as the FiOS router. I then have one of these hooked up as AP with Ethernet from the FiOS. Works good. Wish it handled gigabit better though

I bought three of these in the past year or so, all 3 successfully flashed to RT-AC68U and the best routers I have ever owned. The "directions" in this link appear to have evolved from the past ones that I have used. I believe what I did will not allow the "latest" firmware from ASUS but recent enough. Maybe the new method in this thread is better now, allowing updates from ASUS which I do not allow but do not miss either.

That's interesting. I don't have blazing fast internet, (200Mb/s) which my modem fees through wireless no issue.
Local networking I get about 75MB/s or so (maxing out my laptop) over wireless to a hardwired NAS.

They cancelled my order last time this deal was live but I haven't seen a great enough deal on any other router since then so I'm gonna play this game again.

edit: got confirmation this time. I'll believe it when it gets delivered.

Damn In my setup wired is 775 MB/s usually. Wireless 400-500.

No it's not. That's Mb. unless you are running 10 Gigabit ethernet, and have some technology that wireless networking companies would like to buy from you.

I realize my mixed use of Mb and MB in my specs is confusing, but usually internet speed is quoted in Mb, and when transferring files back and forth I look at speed in MB.

I think you are only going to notice this at near gigabit speeds. I had in the 900s directly wired into a Verizon Quantum router but when I put this Asus in between I was only getting 400-500 Mb/s. It was good enough that I never bothered to try to figure out if there was an issue or if that's just the best it could do.

What's so special about this router? What can I use it for besides a regular router?

They cancelled mine too in december, but this time i got my order confirmation in 7 minutes (no order confirmation when they cancelled). Ordered online.

It is the same hardware, and can be crossflashed to an asus router that goes for $150.
