Generic router question. I've been told by ISP techs that it's a good idea to get a new router every few years, especially if your current router's firmware is no longer being updated, for both security and performance reasons. Is this true, even if you have decent security SW and practice safe computing and surfing and don't have security issues (at least as far as you can tell), and are happy with performance? Or is it just something that router makers (or ISPs that charge you to use their routers) put out so they sell/rent more routers to people who don't really need new ones?

I don't suppose any of you guys have experience with this router and openvpn? Assuming I can follow the process to load a custom firmware. Just trying to find a cheap solution to utilize open vpn and obtain about 15mbps at least. Thanks for your help!
I have fresh tomato installed and setup openvpn server for when I am hotelling. Works fine, but my speeds are usually closer to 2 to 4, not 15. Not sure if that's hotel, my isp, their isp, or my router setup. My up is only 10ish, so I don't expect anything beyond that.

I'm also going to comment that converting these to use alternative firmware is not difficult but it is tedious and can be painful if any problems. Mainly a warning for non-tech folks who could get over their heads if any problems are encountered. I don't want to scare folks, but trying to be realistic as it's not a push button process.

I have 2 of these that flashed and use as AiMesh. If you're not somewhat tech savvy you may want to avoid this. I've rooted phones before and it seemed to work. For me the AiMesh didn't work so well with a wireless backbone. I did it wired (via MoCA) and it works well.

Had this router for about 2 years. I installed advanced tomato for its clean interface. I think over the course the router only needed manual reset once. It's crazy good and reliable for the price.

I haven't received this router yet so can't say for sure about all the settings you want to tweak but this is absolutely a resolvable issue and is very common for multi-router setups. There's no reason to be using multiple SSIDs in 2019 but unfortunately it usually still takes some work.

Make sure you're setting the channels for all bands manually and that they don't overlap between your routers. Then you'll most likely need to reduce the transmit power on the routers to something like low on 2.4 GHz and low-medium on 5 GHz. You also want to look for settings like disconnecting on low signal and RSSI minimum. Use an app on a phone or laptop and walk around your house to determine what the optimal settings would be for this. I use Wifi Analyzer on Android.
Um you have never used Ai mesh have you?

You can not apply any of the above. First and foremost AImesh uses only 1 channel, so if you have 4 aimesh APs, they will all be using channel 1 or whatever. And disconnecting on RSSI min is like pissing up a rope with asus (even merlin).

Yes it sounds wonderful to think that if you have 3 aimesh APs, they all have different non overlapping channels, and you can tell the software that they are all 15ft away from each other so you can set the correct RSSI, but that doesnt happen...

Paired this with my Fios gigabit several months ago when it was on sale. My 5G rocks. Speed test on an Apple TV averages 250mbps 60 ft away through a couple walls. Blows away the Verizon router. Recommended, especially for this price. I also purchased a refurb, has worked flawlessly.

Yes. It is just a wifi router that had special firmware to allow tmobile phones to make and receive calls over wifi
IIRC the T-Mobile firmware hard codes specific ports to be open. The ports can be opened on ANY router and after flashing this to stock/custom firmware to achieve the same result.

The value here is that it's a fairly good router if you flash it with other firmware. It's essentially a rebranded AC68u which usually runs >$100.

Many phones/providers do native wifi calling these days anyway, so whatever that functionality was is irrelevant.

Showed OOS on chrome but was in stock on Firefox. Use different browsers if it shows OOS.

Thanks, needed a 3rd one. They work well with Ethernet back haul, but folks do report handoff issues with certain devices.

Have one currently. T-Mobile sent it to us about 3-4 years ago when we constantly complained about not getting service and good phone calls inside our house. After having it instead of being on 1-2 bars it upped to 3-4.
