How do you do that again? I rebooted it. Will erasing nvram screw up my flashed firmware?
Nope. it will erase all settings

a. Power off router
b. Wait 10 seconds
c. Press and hold WPS button
d. Power up the router and continue to hold WPS button for 15-20 seconds until power LED starts blinking very quickly.

hey guys, I want to upgrade to latest firmware and would like to confirm the steps that I need to follow.

Currently, I have Merlin firmware 384.4 on this router with the CFE 1.0.2.0. This was before the new CFE came out and the also the instructions on removing the t-mobile branding.
I believe what is required here is that:
  1. Update to AiMesh CFE
    1. Create new CFE using the online CFE tool
      1. Do I just use the current 1.0.2.0 CFE as the source CFE on the online tool?
      2. Update the CFE to 1.0.2.0 AiMesh
        1. In Putty type: chmod u+x mtd-write
        2. In Putty type: ./mtd-write new_cfe.bin boot
2. Remove the t-mobile branding

cat /dev/mtd5 > /jffs/mtd5_backup.bin
mkdir /tmp/asus_jffs
mount -t jffs2 /dev/mtdblock5 /tmp/asus_jffs
rm -rf /tmp/asus_jffs/*
sync && umount /tmp/asus_jffs
ln -s /sbin/rc mtd-erase
./mtd-erase -d asus
rm -rf /jffs/.sys/RT-AC68U
nvram unset fw_check && nvram commit && reboot
3. Update to latest merlin firmware through GUI

I'm assuming I do not need to update the firmware to FW_RT_AC68U_30043763626.trx as I'm already running 384.2 firmware on merlin so the

Anybody have any advice on getting AiMesh running on 2 of these converted tm1900s? I put the latest December firmware on 2 but could never get them to mesh together. Is there a way to troubleshoot this... eg: log in via SSH and check the services or whatever. ? Other troubleshooting techniques?

This post is hilarious. So many tools giving false advice and misinformation on flashing. So dangerous, too funny!
I agree that the top rated post makes it sound like this is the easiest thing to do. I've flashed several of these for my house and I'd say it's on the 7 out of 10 difficulty scale. With 10 being you actually writing the code. Knowing how poorly people's reading comprehension skills are here. A lot of people will mess up the install. I've seen it over and over again in the past threads.

If you follow some video guide that holds your hand through each step, then sure it could be easy. Especially if they explain how to fix any issues that arise. If you have no understanding of networking basics, this might be a weekend project.

Would bite but bricked the last one. Lesson learned as I'm pretty tech savvy. Waste of $40

Is it necessary to have atleast two of these as creating mesh network seems to be the basic usage? Or can one of these be paired with another one (say netgear ) to create a mesh network too.

Last time this deal was posted, i got the same email, but my order was in limbo until i called in and had them manually push it through their system.
Wack tried to have them push the order through to confirm.

After a while the rep said there are no more in inventory so she cannot :-(

It's terrible how you don't even get an order number...

Anybody know if you can return this to a T-Mobile store?
No. Not unless you have a TMobile account... if you do then you might be able to return to the store

@htaddicted
Your summarized outline looks good to me. Just a couple of thoughts:
1. While I think it is a very good idea to update your CFE, I doubt it is absolutely necessary for Merlin. It is more to "future-proof" your router in case some future firmware looks for some tell-tale values that are only in the old 1.0.2.0 CFE. It's a red-flag that your router is not legit.
2. Since you are already running 384.x firmware, you could just run an abbreviated set of commands:
cat /dev/mtd5 > /jffs/mtd5_backup.bin (probably not needed but if you do it - copy that file off the router)
ln -s /sbin/rc mtd-erase
./mtd-erase -d asus
rm -rf /jffs/.sys/RT-AC68U
nvram unset fw_check && nvram commit && reboot
Any time you change CFEs, you should erase NVRAM. Some people erase NVRAM whenever they update any firmware. I just do it:
  1. if I have odd problems no one else has after a flash
  2. I updated to a different major version number (ie 384.xxxx > 385.xxxx)

I use this router with firmware it shipped with. Seems good enough for me and didn't bother trying to update.
But since its a cell spot, doesn't it mean that all the T-mobile customers can connect to T-mobile via your router? So all of their internet traffic, legal or illegal goes through your ISP and you are responsible for all of their internet activity.

Not to mention, if a lot of people connect to your internet, it might slow down your bandwidth.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Maybe not as savvy as you think, I got one last time and re-flashed it no issue.

Sorry I missed this as I would like a second one.

I can Root my phone so you would think I could flash a router. 😁

It is only a "Cellspot" in that the word "Cellspot" is stenciled on the plastic case. It isn't a hotspot, so only those with the correct wifi password will connect to your router.
