Once you activate the game, can be done either on an xbox, on a windows machine, it will play on either system. Microsoft started this about 2 years ago, and branded it "Xbox Play Anywhere" You can only play games on pc that are also for xbox that have that logo on the game, and they must be digital purchases. Hope that helps. You don't even need an xbox to do this. Just a microsoft account on your windows 10 machine (only works on windows 10). Most first party xbox games released since Gears of War 4 are "Xbox Play Anywhere" compatible.

Also, if you have an Xbox Game Pass active account, if there any Xbox Play Anywhere games in the collection, you can play them on your Xbox or your PC. That is how I was able to play both Gears of War 4, and more recently Forza Horizon 4.

No, just a Microsoft account.
When you open the "Store" app, then you can see all the games from the windows 10 store.

Great game. Played through it several times on pc and Xbox one X the graphics really shine on the X and a nice 4K hdr tv!
