I do notice that the K7XX are more comfortable to wear for a long period of time, which I do for gaming on my PC. I can power the 58x with my phone without a DAC and it sounds good with the volume maxed out, can't say the same for the K7XX.

I haven't used both long enough to comment on the SQ but I prefer the K7XX for gaming and 58X for music use

These and the 700 series are highly under rated. I bought the 712's back when it was $650 and enjoyed it immensely. It had an incredibly huge and accurate sound stage, beautiful and non-bloated sound, extremely comfortable and one of the best gaming (especially competitive FPS) headphones out there. I eventually upgraded to the HD800, which is almost 10x the price of this. At this price I might just pick up another one for casual use. These weight barely over 8oz, which is lighter than most headphones and are good for those who have neck problems.

Also curious about these K7xx. Had a K702 before, extremely comfortable, but did not like the sound signature; too flat if that makes any sense. I like a warmer sounding headphones, personally, and enjoy the HD58x. A couple reviews I read claim "better low ends", so who knows.

A lot wider. Bass toned down although can be bumped up with the bass port mod (literally remove a sticker on each side of the housing). Needs more juice compared to the 58X too. If you're not headphone trendy the 58X is the better "turn your brain off" purchase. Having owned both the 58X was more fun due to my taste in hard-hitting music. Wideness though the AKG can be a better all-purpose headphone for games, etc as well.

Other than having a wide soundstage and a lightweight/comfortable build, the 7xx really doesnt possess any noteworthy traits. The build quality is really cheap feeling. This should have always been around $150 mark. The 58x are a better buy because it has a slightly boosted low end and a bit more energy in the treble. However, it lacks the mid range of the 6XX. That is where vocals in songs really shine. The 58x is a better all-arounder headphone.

The price range used to compete with the 6xx which was unfortunate because the 6xx was considered the better value. This new price range might be more suitable comparatively.

Wholly inferior to the 58X. I do not recommend these at all.

I have k701 and hd650, which are said to be very close to k7xx and k58x.
K701, if driven well with a decent amp, has a much wider soundstage and imaging, more pronounced details and fabulous high ends, but a bit shy on the bass end.
HD650 has more base, and warmer mids, and it is easier to drive. A phone/iPod could drive hd650 fairly well, but k701 sounds horrible on a phone.

I guess it's all preference. But k701' xx ect. are not even in the same realm as the 58x, and IMO 6xx in preference at least. Just need to be amped properly. Google the little dot tube amp that pairs perfectly with it. Makes a difference.

The sder in me came here to warn about massdrop. I'm not the type to keep around headphones if I'm not going to use them. Massdrop is essentially msrp, and they are not limited release like they describe. No returns, so if you don't like the sound. Good luck recouping your money. Lost a pretty penny the first few years massdrop was around. That being said, after 30+ headphones, k7xx is one of the few I've kept around.

FYI, detachable cable is 3.5mm one end and mini-XLR on the other.

I totaly agree with this sentiment. I've never had a more comfortable pair of headphones for gaming, ever! I own a bunch of different headsets and the comfort you get from the K7XX is just far superior to anything else. A lot of other headsets cause me to sweat a tiny bit around my ears after longer gaming sessions but these just...theres nothing...at the end of a long session of gaming theres just comfort. The slightly (very slight) lower weight also helps after a long time of usage. The sound off of something like DT990 or the HD580 might be slightly better overall but I'd give the comfort victory to the K702 personally.

In the end tho, they are all great headphones each bringing something slightly different to the table. My personal opinion agrees that the K7XX are a bit more comfortable than the rest and I do value comfort quite a lot.
