It's a ridiculously large impact. Great if you need those specs and want that ecosystem or are fine with a single point product.

But I bet a lot of people could get away with the 1/2" compact impact, which is actually a really nice tool and should be enough to do lug nuts for most cars/trucks.

You say that but...

The compact 1/2" impact has 200 ft-lb of torque vs 650 for this bad boy.

I replaced struts this week and could NOT get the control-arm bolts (22mm) to budge with any combination of breaker bars, heat, or penetrating oil.

I borrowed my friend's Milwaukee heavy-duty impact (identical to this model) and they came off in half a second.

So...I agree with your statement generally. But sometimes it's not overkill. Smilie

My $.02 - this is a very good deal. About half the price of the Milwaukee brand...and the same price you'd pay for the Bauer brand at Harbor Freight (which I also think is a well-built brand if we're being honest).

Is this a better one, given you have nearby power jack?

I have both this and the smaller one. The big for control arm bolts as mentioned above and where you have a lot of room, and the smaller for tight spaces where a ton of power is not needed. 169 for the big and 69 for the small are very good prices. Get a smaller battery for the small one. Like 1.5 or 2 amps. They are only like $20

If you are comparing FT-LB of torque, then yes the HF one is almost 2x as powerful. Most people think that HF torque specs are overly stated so YMMV. Just keep in mind, you will always be confined to a power outlet. For $49 more you have the freedom to use this everywhere. I keep one in the trunk of my car and if I or my SO catches a flat tire, I can zip them out in seconds.

I agree with @mb_pharoh. Its very nice to not have to worry about being tethered to a power cord.

Check brickseek, you might be able to pick one up at your local store.

And when the battery goes bad you will have to throw the entire tool in the trash because only Craftsman tools will be carried at Lowes.
Not correct, Lowes will be carrying Kobalt as their house brand permanent .... No plans to discontinue KOBALT !

This thing is a beast, I broke every bolt imaginable with my car. Even $200 was considered a good deal.
