I bought this bike last year and I'm content with it. I would buy it again. I used to only own Trek bikes, and it rides the same for much less money.

So tempted to jump on the Avalanche. People dump on Suntour forks because they are standard on these kinds of dept store bikes, but you get a fork with 100mm travel and lockout, plus hydro disc brakes, and decent mid-tier components for $500 bucks. Biggest downer for me is the 3x9 gearing. Great deal though.

edit: somebody s going to jump in here and claim there are used CL deals for similar spec'ed bikes that are better for the same price. They are rare, at least in my area.

A lockout on a mountain bike allows it to be used around time which easily pays for itself so that's my only requirement. However, if you only plan on using it on trails, this is fine.
I like the lockout for climbing. My usual trail has a couple of steep climbs. Lockout is a must for me.

Which one was that? Do you have a link?
I wouldn't get caught up in the bull bikes thing. If you're looking for a solid entry level bike this GT is a good bike at a fantastic deal.

You pay extra $$$ just because it has "Trek" on the frame...

I am not saying these bikes are bad or anything and for staying on pavement light trail use sure they are fine but the bulls hard tail bikes were race level bikes for about 700 bucks....the shock alone on those bikes were going for 400 beans....it was an unbelievable deal..... If they were available (which sadly are not) they are 4x these bikes.....easily..... Imho of course.

For this price point (or very close to it), is there anything better to look at?

I've been wanting a bike for awhile now, mainly for just bike path riding, paved/gravel mostly. I will probably hit some dirt trails camping but I don't intent to jump it or anything like that.

I went to go look at this bike today. I'm a fan of GT bikes from back in the day they are a higher end brand but this bike comes with garbage components. But for 299, I picked one up for just to use the frame and will be replacing the components with some shimano XTR components

Anyone have an idea how often bikes like this go on sale? I am wanting a/this bike, but I'm not in the best place to get one this instant, maybe in a month or two.

This particular sale happens twice annually.

I'm a bigger overweight guy trying to start getting in shape. (5'10.5", 270lbs +/-) Would this be fine for me to start riding around town and on Park paved trails? Or look for something else.
