I was in staples the other day to buy ink for my recycling and that place was absolutely dead. They had one new cashier who was practically falling asleep, print shop with not one person in it other than the employee and the manager roaming the store who kept asking if I needed help buying ink today. (I don't use ink and don't need toner which is only sold online for my printer so I was only interested in what was closest to $30). I took one off the ring but then found another a buck cheaper so I put it back and he rushed over and straightened the package I put back.

They are still closing staples (and depots) in my area and I thought wow...……. bring back those paper rebates to get some traffic in here before you're all out of a job.

Sadly, I don't think rebates are ever coming back. I'm not sure the SD'er traffic is what they need. At least they still have ink recycling and occasional fee free GC's.

I think you're right. I think the paper companies paid for them and they are positioned to not discount any more.

I wanted to use my rewards for some scrapbook supplies (die cuts and embossing folders) and it looks like they completely eliminated them online (everything is oos). I paid full price for my previous purchases (never a price match) which was well over what anyone else charged but it was a good use of my rewards. I struggle to find anything now.

When my plus runs out year end I'm probably not going to see another staples purchase.... ever.

In my area, there were many more people than SDers who bought the paper. I stood in line behind plenty of people who came in and bought a couple reams and lots of other stuff that didn't even have a rewards account and paid with a credit card.

Sad to see Staples going away...Always make me sad seeing people lose their jobs. I dont think I spent over $100 in Staples for past few years combined. Last I was there was prob the paper deal and picked up office table on clearance (I think it was Office Max- I dunno)..

Bank of America has 10% cashback with a $6 maximum for staples. YMMV.

Keep in mind some Staples only allows for 1 GC per purchase.

I went in to buy ink this past weekend, saw one for $30.94, great, just enough for ink spend. I paid and as I was walking out, noticed they discounted the ink to $29.94 for plus member. I don't remember them doing that previously, so I had to exchange for another one, ugh!

Yup. Ad states limit one. YMMV based on the manager/ store. With a recent memo going out about limiting them it will be much more ymmv than the last round (of Visas).

Fees fees fees. Many here also earn 5% for office store purchases.

You use your CC to buy the gift cards and get 5% back on other things. I use it for my utilities for example.

I just bought ink on the 29th and they didn't discount mine I made sure I looked at the POS machine before swiping my card to make absolutely sure it was over $30.

In December, I somehow had nearly 1000 in spending for the year. I have no idea how. Maybe my kids use my phone number. Short a little but I needed nothing. Sent hubby in to buy something a couple days before year end to hit the $1000 mark to get plus and told him be ABSOLUTE sure total pretax is over x.xx.

Comes home and says he did good cuz they gave him a discount (manually applied for no good reason) which made me short a few cents! Sent him back and he returned the item and told them my wife says we don't want any discount EEK! so re-ring it! He could have bought candy but he said, nope........... we had to buy something we don't need so I'm not buying candy I don't need too. LMAO

This is what I got in case someone is in a hurry to buy $30 in ink:

1 EPSON 273 XL PHOTO
010343902152 20.99
1 EPSON 220 MAGENTA
010343915602 9.99
SUBTOTAL 30.98

Originally I picked out two HP inks that I THOUGHT were buy one get one 30% off (signs on each ink with a small red note on them) but when I brought them up they rang up full price and manager said oh NO...……. has to be XL type (others had the same looking sign but instead in small writing say 110% price guarantee...… deceptive if you ask me. Looking at the aisle it looks like all the signs are the same, but whatever, I don't need the ink so I'll get something else. He COULD have discounted it but nope and I thought wow...… this store is probably going to close for lack of business and you're too dang cheap to take off a few bucks.
