First off, they DO have noise cancelling. Is it great? Not like my bro-in-law's Bose...but for $50 (heck, even $100) it is great. I use them to call all the time and it works phenomenal for call clarity. Not just what I hear, but my wife has made the comment that for her it is definitely clearer than when I used my AirPods and also occasionally clearer compared to handheld.
Second point - Comfort - These are very comfortable. Do they heat up on a 90° day with high humidity, yes but I'm inclined to think anything would (including the Bose).
Third - Quality - Build quality is excellent. Regarding audio quality, I'm not an audiophile, but it delivers a very good sound with full bass. The seal around your ear does a good job at keeping a large amount of noise out (in addition to the noise cancelling) as well as keeping most of your music/sounds in, so people can't hear what you're listening to.
Fourth - Plug - Okay so it doesn't have the brand new USB plug. You're paying $50 for a pair of noise cancelling headphones.
Fifth - I'm not sure, but I'm glad I got them and I've since put all my other headphones in the drawer.
I tried NC on a flight, and these were able to suppress background engine sound for a good sleep.
I have never tried Bose/Sony and believe 300 is smartphone money, not for an accessory...

Excellent noise canceling? A lot of people out there state otherwise.
Can you go back to a previous track with the on-board controls, or only skip ahead?
I'm in a foreign language school and have to listen to a ton of audio files, all I really need are decent onboard controls for back/forward track skipping, good battery life, and comfortable for long periods.
I think I can live without ANC and aptX etc. These seem like they would suit my needs, but if there's a premium to be paid for ANC (which sounds like it isn't all that great on this model anyways) I could go with a cheaper option if anyone has any recommendations.
UPDATE: I went ahead and grabbed a pair, I have a lot of classmates who sprung for the $300 Sony's but I don't think I need something that high end.
So far they seem they'll fit my needs. I've worn them up to an hour now without discomfort, though they do press my glasses into the side of my head enough to leave an indent, but it's not painful.
The ANC turns on by default when you power them up and I'm too lazy to shut it off every time so I just leave it on. It cuts out probably 80% of the AC fan noise in our dorm room, doesn't seem to eliminate much else. It does affect the sound quality a bit, but for my use case which is all dialogue it's not that big of a deal.
The on board controls were the most important thing for me, and unfortunately they didn't work out of the box with VLC on Mac OS. Luckily I found a script online that converts the bluetooth key presses into media key presses from the keyboard so it's at least useable now. It's a 1 second long press and hold to skip/reverse tracks, tapping controls the volume up/down. I would have preferred it to be the opposite, durability of the buttons is unknown at this point but I know Anker will cover me if they fail within the next 18 months, one of the main reasons I decided on these rather than any of the cheaper alternatives.

The noise canceling is average to below average in quality though. So if your main reason for buying these is the noise canceling you will be disappointed. Especially when you compare to Sony 1000MX or Bose QC series. Those are 5x the price but their sound is much better and the NC on Bose and Sony are among the best you can buy for under $400. Just my .02 worth.

Completely agree with this review.

Looks like taotronics is better for the airplane.
