Long as they're the same basic drives I can deal with sticking some kapton tape on them!

👍

I myself have one 8TB red (older) and three 8TB whites (newer, from a recent deal) in RAID 5 in my QNAP NAS. No tape required!

Tempted to jump on this deal for a spare drive, but I think I'm going to wait until larger capacity drives start dropping in price.

I was going to buy some 4TB Reds from Newegg the other day when they were $90 but fortunately waited and caught on to this. Finally taking the plunge on a NAS since my externals have been acting flaky lately. Going to go to bed and try to ignore that I just spent $500 on HDDs...

A couple days ago I just saw an error show up on one of the white label 8tb drives I bought in Nov 2017. My pool is 16 drives and about 50/50 with whites and reds. Some of the reds are 6 months older. Could just be coincidence that it was a white label. I guess I'll find out more as time goes by. Also, that machine is my offline backup and stays off unless data is being written or read. So not very many hours on the drives. Anyone else had any of 8tb or 10tb drives fail?

Good luck. If you're anything like me, $500 is just the beginning. Gotta have a backup too and redundancy in your backup array. I've lost too much sleep over hard drives. Right now I have a partial backup rack of my offline storage server on the floor under my desk. I glanced at it a few days ago and realized there's $1100 worth of drives there. I need to find a cheaper hobby.

A couple weeks ago I ordered one of the 10tb easystores from best buy. When it came I opened the enclosure to find a drive with no label. I was like, wow, now they're doing no label?... Then I looked a little closer and saw the label had been ripped off. At that point I was like, okay someone had a bad 10tb and swapped it for a new one. Kinda shady but I could see it happening. I connected it up to the PC and couldn't find anything about the drive. Reported as 0GB in diskpart. After thinking about it more, I looked at the actual housing of the drive. It wasn't even an 8 or 10tb. There was space on the bottom with cast in gussets running out from the platter motor, like small capacity drives have. The crazy thing was the box still had its seals on it. I took it back and said it didn't work and Best buy swapped it out for me. My concern now is that they will think I put the small drive in there and come after me.

Where are you seeing anything about the $10 GC. Not seeing that anywhere, but I do see the $130 member price.
