You act like disc brakes are common at $250, and they are definitely not. Not every bike needs disc brakes either, especially not at this price point. Why would you come in here just to be so snide and unhelpful?
In short, the Nishiki hybrid bike here for $250 will be a few pounds lighter than your Costco bike. The style will also be a little different if that matters to you. But to be honest, riders of both types of bikes will be considered old geezers. The components are both at the lower end of the price spectrum and not worth the time and effort to analyze. The components are serviceable, generally reliable and durable. Both bike "brands" are essentially stickers on the frame. Don't read anything into their heritage. They are both box-store level mass market bikes.

If I may judge you a little bit based on your post (the fact that you brought a bike from 2017 and haven't ridden it, and is asking about it here on SD), I would say that it is absolutely not worth the extra money for you to upgrade.
I was at Dicks Sporting Goods store yesterday and was scoping out their bikes. I was impressed with the quality of the GT and Nishiki bikes for their value. Today they went on the 50% sale. Tempted by the GT Avalanche but I already have a real good mountain bike and I really want to get a fast hybrid bike. My local store had both colors and they were put together well with my quick check of the shifting and brakes. The difference between the colors is the black/blue has matte finish and the grey/blue has a glossy finish. Both look nice. I don't know which one I like better. I am going to pick up this bike today.

It is so light. I was surprised how light it fell when I took it off their rack. A bike with Shimano EZ fire trigger, Shimano Acera front derailer & rear derailer for under $250? Solid deal. Other big name bike companies with Shimano Acera components cost way more. Felt comfortable on the seat and with the handles. Tires look nice and are going to be much faster than my mountain bike. I also took a look at the Nishiki Anasazi with the shock fork and thicker aggressive tire tread that leans more to trails but I prefer the Manitoba because it felt much lighter and will be faster with the smoother tire.

It has a 4.4 out of 5 star rating (88 reviews) on Dicks Sporting Goods Store website.

*I purchased the grey color and will pick it up later at my local store.

I said that I love the weight of this Manitoba bike and want to keep it at 27.4 pounds (medium) and not put any extra accessories to add weight. Unfortunately it is too difficult for me to ride it bare bones and I simply can't do that comfortably. Before I used to ride with heavy lock in a backpack and it wasn't comfortable at all. I love the Topeak Explorer bike rack and Topeak Trunk bag on my other bike. It makes it so convenient, lots of storage and I can easily carry my NY Kryptonite u-lock (3.75 pounds plus the additional cable). No way would I trust a cheap light weight cable lock.... Now I purchased a Topeak Explorer bike rack for this Manitoba bike. It adds 1.38 pounds and costs $44.95 but the pros really outweigh the added 1.38 pounds weight. When I don't need the Topeak trunk bag but need a little bit of storage, I have an Adidas waist bag or Topeak seat pack wedge (medium) as my option. When I can, I will try to ride as light as possible.

Does anyone know any cable for the lock deal? I have a u-lock already. This bike has quick-release front wheels and seat.

When I use my Krytonite NY u-lock, I always use a cable loop for the wheels and my helmet. If you can't get the u-lock around the seat tube and rear wheel, loop the front wheel with cable--> go through helmet--> go around the rear wheel and lastly into your u-lock.

This is how I lock my bike most the of time.... With this Nishiki, everything is so easy to take off with the quick release wheels and seat. I also have a real thin seat cable but I don't use it.

Krytonite cable
https://www.amazon.com/Kryptonite...r=8-3&th=1

What is good about the Krytonite cable loop is that it is 10mm thick and braided so it is more difficult to cut vs other cable loops. Plus there are times when I have nothing to connect my u-lock to so I use the large cable as the "main lock" but I only do this as last option and where I can see my bike like through a restaurant or store window.

I am loving my blazing fast Nishiki Manitoba. It looks great, comfortable, fast, shifts well, brakes perfectly fine and was a great value at $249.99.

After I bought it, I rode it around and noticed that I didn't have full range of gears like on my old Marlin mountain bike. My old Marlin bike could easily go through all the gears and not rub against the derailer. My Marlin bike had better quality Shimano components with Alivio rear derailer, Altus front derailer and Acera shifters but I figured that I should still be able to go through gears or high majority with exception of cross chaining. I called Dicks Sporting Goods and a technician would be available on Friday to service it. I spoke with employee who worked the bike department and he said the technician who also owns a bike store and rides like 40 miles per day will be here on Friday.... That is what I want to hear. I guess they hire outside source who is more knowledgeable and experienced for servicing. He fixed it and now my shifting works 100% perfect and I am loving my Nishiki. Here is a tip. Give a decent press with your left thumb and the shift will be much smoother. If you just give a little push and the button clicks over, it may grind a second before switching over. If you push it "longer over", it switches over much smoothly..... With my other bike with more expensive Shimano parts, it switches over easily with a light push but again.... That is why it costs lot more. Not a big deal to push a little bit longer to switch from 2nd to 3rd gear more easily. Give it a decent push with left thumb. No issues at all with pointer fingers or right thumb press. Light touch and it switches over smoothly.

I looked at some youtube Parktool adjusting the derailers and cables and there is no way would I even attempt to try to do this job. It seemed difficult to fine tune for a normal biker.

If you got this bike and have an issue, don't assume that these Shimano Acera parts are junk and the bike is junk. Just bring it back and have a TECHNICIAN service it. I can see lot of people don't bring it back and just ride with incorrect tuned shifting cables and then they blame Shimano or Dicks employee. The in-store employee will take a look but the technician is the one who will actually service it. It is free too as you just bought it. I am guessing the technician comes once a week.

Wtf. They cancelled my order. No email or anything. I just checked the order status cause I'm wondering why this thing isn't available for pickup yet and I see it's cancelled.

Thanks. I didn't think about locking the helmet. I ordered the 7ft and 2.6ft for $11.85

I don't like walking around with a helmet. I don't think someone would steal a helmet as some people don't think it is cool to wear and it is kind of gross to wear someone else's hat or helmet. A thief is nasty to steal a helmet but I am sure it happens..... I use the 4 foot cable and can lock both wheels and the helmet and the put the loop into the u-lock..... 7 foot is so long. Locking multiple bikes? The 2.6 foot cable can probably lock up the rear wheel, helmet and put the loop into the u-lock. Save you carrying weight... Put a hose clamp on your front wheel or invest in wheel lock skewer if you aren't locking it up. These quick release are so easy to use.

Today I tried to use a Krytonite NY u-lock with the Nishiki seat tube and rear wheel to a post and I was unable to. I could only do seat post and then use the cable for both the wheels and helmet. I could use the Sheldon Brown method but I don't like the idea of u-lock touching my spokes.

I will be commuting to school. I don't want to carry the helmet from class to class either. I think the 7ft is too long too but I need to raise the price over $20 to apply the $10 off discount from Amazon (thus $11.85 for both). My U lock is slightly big that can fit both the rear tire and the frame. I only need to worry about the front wheel. Nobody will probably steal the seat and helmet, but things happen. So if I could prevent/deter it from happening, it will save me the trouble of getting replacements when it did happen.

Noticed this today on my bike... The rear derailer is Acera and the front derailer is Altus. The online description says the front derailer is Acera and that is incorrect. I zoomed in on the Manitoba pic and it shows Altus..... My old more expensive Marlin uses Altus derailer. Works great.

Wish they'd do the sale again. They won't price match an old sale. I like this better than the gt aggressor.

Thanks to a terrible experience with a local store manager, I was able to get this bike for $200. Did anyone purchase the maintenance plan? DICKs quoted me $20/ year.
