Skyscanner says that $373 fare involves long overnight stops in Montreal and 32+ hours total travel time each way.

I would say it's the new "normal" price for US-China routes in some specific months provided by Chinese airlines. I just had one trip to Fuzhou city from JFK via Guangzhou in May, on China Southern Airlines, the price was $398 round trip. I think they also provide free hotel for next day transfer flight but I didn't use that. Food is better than UA tho.

it may be common out of new york but not phoenix.

Yes and I think the reason is that Chinese airlines don't have many destinations here in the US. Most of them only have JFK and/or LAX, so you need to buy domestic tickets separately.

Love these cheap china tickets. Shanghai is a great trip. Watch out for the Chinese only bars.

Having been to China a few times (loved it so much every ti went), a little piece of advice to all interested parties. Travel Hainan Airlines!!! one of the best and hidden gems. You can find a deal via Seattle.
