yeah except they're counting their margin on the unit as part of the profit... so if you hire someone not earning anything off the unit, they will not install for $1500.

Speak for yourself. I lost 2 weeks of power during Ike and it was extremely hot and humid. Couldn't find a hotel to go to.

At least 2k.
Electrician, plumber/gas guy etc will uncover issues that drive the install price
way higher.

Checking online I think it'd run about $1500 tops to have somebody do a nice install. If you lookup the costs, they are often including the price of the unit... So minus that out. Need something for it to sit on and then run it to the switch you have to have installed. Problem is finding somebody that wants to do the install, heh.

Ideally, you do the placement of the unit. Like make an elevated concrete pad for it to sit on and then have the contractor just do the switch and hookup.

Lots of y outube examples.

Not sure where you got your data from but permits alone would be a few hundreds. Depending on your gas line location that might be over $1000. Not including electrical and number of breakers could be another $1000. I would say $3000 to be safe. Labor is usually more expensive than the unit when I was pricing in FL.

Everyone that wants one. Please note that these things need annual maintenance. Oil and filter. Depending on usage it could be expensive or else they will not work when you need them

Isn't that an excessive amount of power for regular homeowner use?
Yes, but considering 20kw usually runs closer to $10k, and the installation will cost you almost the same. And you have enough power to run your A/C... If I lived in the humid south I would jump on this. Out here in the Bay area in California, we won't die if our AC isn't running.

I live in the humid south and don't think it's worth it. Last time our power went out during a hurricane, it was during Ike in 2008 for 2 days. No power outage in Harvey at all in 2016. Weather is usually cooler after a hurricane so it's not as if people are dying due to heat strokes right after.
Not worth buying for a low probability, low impact event.
If you really need power backup, install solar panels with grid tie and battery backup instead.
