Flight compensation from Delta reroute?

I'm not a big travel person so I'm new to this. Family is flying across country. Just found out Delta canceled first connecting flight from home.. Buffalo to JFK. The new itinerary now has us leaving from Buffalo airport 12 hours later and arriving 12 hours later than our original booking. This sucks because we basically lose an entire day.
Im waiting for Delta to call back, but my question is would there be any chance to get some sort of flight compensation? If so, what?

Since Delta cancelled the flight, they'll almost certainly put you on any reasonable flights you can find from the same origin to same destination. You don't have to accept their first offer.
The thing to do is find the alternative flights you actually want, get all the flight times and numbers, and call Delta and ask to be put on those flights. It helps if you can tell the agents exactly what you want so they don't have to search.
Always be pleasant with the phone agent. If the first one can't make it work, thank them and hang up and call again to get a different agent.
Good luck!
