These are really handy tools for removing stuck/pesky oil filters, especially those located in awkward places. Wish I had it last night or my knuckles wouldn't be all banged up! PSA these are only good for *removing* oil filters, not tightening them. Oil filters should be hand tightened anyway. Recommended by the venerable Scotty Kilmer:

use all the time though, i like doing my own oil and gettin all these slick oil/filter deals!

But it's basically a precaution to pre-oil the o-ring. It's mainly lubrication for installing the oil filter without damaging the o-ring.
