WD drives are quieter. If kept inside enclosure, run 10c cooler with a simple 140mm fan on top; these Seagate drives operate at 41c with the same fan at idle -- 45c+ with no fan.
As op said, the benefit is the easy return if you encounter premature failure. No having to deal with refurbished drives if you have to file an RMA

I bought this last year and it's worked out great.
Btw, what's going on with the Costco site? It's up, but its product listings are extremely limited. Not out of stock, but literally not there either through dept browsing or product type searching. E.g. no tablets, hard drives, etc. This product clicks-through and can be specifically searched, but you can't see it otherwise. I assume it's a temporary glitch.
Fantastic deal. I bought two of these drives - one three years ago, one two years ago (Amazon) on sale for $180 down from $200. $119 is awesome. Never had a problem with them. Note: I've never used the hub on them, so I can't speak to that, but they make great backup and media drives.
Dealing with one that is failing as we speak. I am able to get data off it so far, but speeds drop from the normal 120mb/sec to 10-20 for a while, then the copy fails, the drive disappears for about 30 seconds then comes back. click ok on the copy file error and let it run until it decides to error out again, repeat.
For 4.7 TB of stuff, its been 2 days, I don't even know if my data's integrity is still there.
Varied responses on this thread (and reviews on other sites). I'll pause for now.
Does anyone know the "head parking" time on these? (I am learning that) this seems to be an important factor correlated to the longevity of a drive used in a NAS setup - as some of us are.
the main gripe with these is they use SMR (shingled magnetic something) techinology. The magnetic data stripes actually overlap slightly. This is fine for reading data, but if writing data, either lots of it or doing non-sequential writes, is that write performance just goes in toilet.
people looking to shuck are often setting up multiple drive beefier storage systems, and so avoid these.
I can confirm that these have really slow write times. I had to pick one up yesterday to back up another drive that is failing and right now I am getting about 28mb/sec transfer. Over two days to transfer 8tb. Yikes
