This laptop has 2 memory slots, neither of which is soldered. I added another 8gb for 16 total. There is also a 2.5-inch SATA III bay available. I added a 1TB SSD.

This cpu is not slow in any stretch of the imagination. It will not be the bottle neck for this machine. If anything, it's slow because of all the crap ware that is pre-loaded on these machines. Do a fresh install without that crap and I'm sure it will run a lot better.

OP says Quad core which is 4 cores. It's probably a typo. This 8265 is 4 cores and 8 threads.
