Delonghi Pinguino 4 in 1 portable AC with Heat pump $240 - 500 sq ft 12,500 btu

$198.00
+44 Deal Score

$240 at the start of the deal was an all time low price and lowest price ever for a powerful 4 in 1 PAC with heat. During the deal it was briefly $198. It is in and out of stock at this point. Check back. This is the updated '3A' Costco version for which I will share my personal experience. Model PAC EL275 HGRKC-3A

Value: Check out says "Item condition NEW" but it is listed as an Amazon certified renewed product with the promise that it will look and perform as new. Some pp have reported receiving units which are not as described. Costco regular price was $400 with a spring sale a bit lower. This Amazon deal includes a 90 day right of return and warranty from Amazon. An extended service contract offer available up to 30 days post-purchase covers all parts and labor plus accidental damage for 3 or 4 years while also protecting the owner from bearing any return shipping costs for the entire contract period.
This is a powerful feature-packed heat pump for the price.

Security: 90 days by Amazon + three years protection for $34 or four years for $45. Buy the extended warranty up to 30 days post-purchase. No deductibles, covers return shipping and from day of purchase covers accidental damage, drops spills. No need to lug back to warehouse or pay to ship back to Delonghi.
Buying the extended warranty means no dealing with time-wasters at Delonghi while potentially improving the resale value of heat pump. Asuruion states that it is transferable at no charge. The standard Delonghi warranty is essentially useless.

Wiki:] In the Wiki please find useful information which I have added including vent part numbers and recommended inspection upon receipt

I have great things to say about this model along with a few cautions which should help you determine if this PAC is right for you.

The good:
Powerful. No draining required, automatically expels condensate through vent hose, no drips, no leaks ( in AC mode only ). 'Real Feal' mode increases comfort without over-cooling.
On-unit storage for the remote. Comes with a capped vent terminus for permanent floor or wall installation. If you are lucky enough to be able to down-vent then this greatly improves the cooling, aesthetic factor, security and convenience. The cabinet itself is sleek and more pleasing than many of the competition. Resumes operation in last set mode in the event of power interruption.

Quiet: At 53dbA max this is one of the quietest PACs. IN AC mode user may select three fan speeds. I found low speed to be very quiet. But fan speed may increases automatically during cooling. No rattles or knocks. Did not notice compressor kick-in clunk which can be annoying on other PACs. Compressor kick-out has a slight thump. Experience will vary depending on room acoustics and variation among machines.

Venting options: through an exterior wall, a floor, a door panel, through an interior wall to a room with an open window such as a laundry room, up through a 5" or greater chimney such as a fireplace. If a small window pane can be removed and replaced then the small vent flange may be installed in a plexi glass pane increasing security and convenience. .

How it sucks: Single hose PAC's use conditioned air instead of outside air to pump the heat out of your home and to cool the
components. In other words they literally suck air out of the home and because of that they are less energy
efficient than other more expensive or less convenient options. Nevertheless
PAC work very well for certain people and certain climates. Single hose
PAC's do not work unless
unless something is left open to replenish the air used for exhausting heat.
Failure to provision outside air is origin of many poor consumer ratings on all PAC except dual hose.
No point in rehashing this limitation in this thread.

A few minor issues: This particular model has window vent kit plastic that breaks if you look at it sideways. The hose connector twist-locks on to the back of the unit and has a tendency to fall off unless it is modified which is not difficult. The 5" diameter hose is O.K. but a bit shorter than other brands at 4 feet end to end including the hose adapters. Can not be extended more than a few inches without compromising efficiency other than when venting straight up through a 6" or larger chimney such as a fireplace. The hose fittings are -not- hard to assemble at all except by folks who can not screw in a light bulb. Requires a bit of putty or tape at connections to prevent leaks.

FAN: Three fan speeds may be selected in AC and heat however the speed will increase periodically during operation. In dehumidify fan speed is fully automatic.

HEAT PUMP mode, unlike cooling mode, may require frequent manual draining. update: Originally it was reported that a continuous drain tube could not not be affixed. Delonghi now says that in heating mode only this is o.k. You still should not allow the unit to drain continuously in cooling mode as some condensate inside is required to cool the compressor.

DeLonghi N and AN series compared: I found the N270 to be a little easier to control with a nicer top located control panel which displays actual as well as set temperature and it has an LCD remote with room temperature display. My N270 does make more of an audible bang when the compressor kicks in compared to this EL275 The EL series seem to be heavier duty units and they are quieter.

Amperage: The EL275 I received has 9.5 amps on the rating plate. Refer to you specific unit's label for amps as some versions use more.

Dehumidifies well in cooling mode. However, unlike a dedicated dehumidifier, PAC output air can be too cool. In fall and winter months will likely require frequent draining. In humid climates this draining might be once an hour.

My experience: 16 x 12 bedroom installation with short hose length down-venting through closet floor. 1500 ft elevation , coastal central California, high humidity forested mountain area, full sun mid summer 9 am to 5 pm, 95 F or better day time temps, single level 2 BR older home with good insulation over bedrooms, dual pane windows, no insulation at all in cathedral ceiling part of home which is all but bedrooms and bath. This unit can chill the bedroom to 66 F in no time at all even with room door open when >90 outside. I always leave kitchen window open to provide vent air. This PAC makes the rest of home bearable when turned on in the morning.

HEATING: In the fall the heat pump worked great but unit filled with condensate and shut off when humidity was greater than 70%. The internal base drain pan filled up in less than an hour requiring manual draining. UPDATE: Delonghi is now saying that it is in fact O.K. to connect a continuous drain tube IN HEATING MODE ONLY. This makes the unit much more usable for heating than originally reported. Does yield a nice dry heat and dehumidifies on damp days 40-65 F. The thermostat works well at controlling the room temperature in heat mode and can be set from 55 F to 81 F. For me, the warm air volume provided and the de-humidification together make better use out of the 1000 watts consumed than an electric heater.

Easy to roll room to room so one unit is capable of keeping this home cool and dry.

Buy recommendation depends on user's climate and installation requirements. Easier to recommend buying if you can down-vent or vent through the wall. Plan on needing a replacement window kit unless very careful not to move unit or remove-replace vent often. Or make your own window kit.

9/28 update by o.p. : These Costco units were received in every condition from like-new to very heavily used. The only way to tell for sure that your unit was thoroughly cleaned and restored to like-new condition as advertised by Amazon is it to remove the clam shell covers for inspection. This is true even if the coil behind the filter looks new. Only a Phillip screwdriver is required. The back cover comes off first and goes on last. Do not try to disconnect the control wire from the front cover.

Greasy dirt or corrosion on the inside coils indicates that the unit was not thoroughly cleaned and renewed and therefore not as described by Amazon. Any mishandling will be evident by a bent bar in front of the condenser inside where the compressor hit it when/if the unit was dropped. Take photos and start a claim before your 90 days expire if this is the case because these heavily used units may operate but not very well or with reasonable efficiency.

If your unit is dirty inside then you are breathing in germs and mold which is a health hazard so do not hesitate to make a claim by contacting Amazon by phone to report the condition of your unit. Woot will reply quickly by email to set up a return or replacement.

Those of you who -did- get low use like-new units should be very happy. You now have a great deal of added confidence knowing that the model is solidly built and reliable such that Costco customers evidently got years of use from them before returning them under the Costco satisfaction warranty.

Now $198 shipped which is $42 cheaper than when this deal began.

Shows in cart "Item condition new" might want to take a screen shot before check out.

90 Day Amazon warranty makes it slick. Available extended 3 year warranty for only $34 makes it better.

Leave unit upright for 6 hours before plugging in! Label advises 24 hours.

Vent connections WILL require sealing. Putty can be easily remove but quick set bathroom calk and aluminum duct tape work too. Seal both connector to back of unit, hose to hose connectors. Throw away any included weather stripping and buy good stuff for the window kit

Replacement part numbers for venting
Encompass has part numbers with pictures.
https://encompass.com/item/961158...gL7l_D_BwE

TL1854: Complete hose assembly with fittings pre-installed. $22. Has TL2667 fitted which twist-locks to back of EL27 series PAC

TL1857: Vent flange for floor or wall with cap

NE2002: A better vent flange with cap for floor or wall for the N270GN and with a slightly larger inside diameter. It will accommodate the vent hose terminus from the deal PAC plus many other models. part NE2002 or part 5351050600 https://encompass.com/item/961038...351050600/

N1370: exhaust hose adapter mates with NE2002 flange with tight fit if you prefer not to use the original which requires a layer of tape when used with this flange.

TL2667: Connector, hose to back of PAC. Bayonet connector, part TL2667. Important spare to have! $3.28
TL2667 hose connector is the only proprietary vent part specific to the deal EL PAC. If this bayonet hose connector breaks then you will not be able to use your PAC until you have obtained a replacement.

An extra vent flange with cap is handy if you want to use the PAC in another room which can accommodate floor or wall venting.

ASSEMBLY:
Connecting the hose to the back of the PAC should be the last step. Insert and rotate counter-clockwise until the PAC pins engage the TL2667 hose connector. It may require some force. After that try not to disturb the PAC or hose as it tends to pop off. Securing it with aluminum tape is best. This connection is disassembled at the end of the season so use a sealing solution that removes cleanly and easily. Putty or latex caulk is advised at the PAC connection and on the outside of the hose where it screws in to the connector to prevent air leakage. Wrapping with a light sheet of rubber secured with a strap also works.

DRAIN OUTLET:
Located on the rear close to the floor. 6 inches of silicone tubing slipped over the outlet with a plug makes draining far more convenient.

Free shipping carton available with all internal packing. Pick up in norcal or send me a pre-paid ups label.

BTW I spoke with Asurion who offers the 3 and 4 year service contract. It is transferable at no cost. May be purchased up to 30 days from invoice. Takes full effect after the 90 day Amazon warranty expires and does not require that you retain packing.

If you have not unpacked your unit yet then lay it on the side to slide it out to preserve the high quality carton. Recycle on CL. Don't forget to leave unit upright 6 to 24 hours before plugging in.

I've added important inspection information to the wiki at the beginning of the post for anyone who purchased this PAC.

My second unit arrived Thursday. I suspected something was off when I drained it and crud came out.

I removed the clam shell covers which is easy to do. Once inside I discovered heavy greasy lint on the internal coils even though the coil under the air filter looked new from the outside. There were signs of years of heavy use including rust and corrosion. The protection bar in front of the coil was bent in to the coil from the rubber mounted compressor slamming in to the coil during a drop.

I do not know how many of these units were not "thoroughly cleaned and renewed" as described by Amazon. If you received a lightly used unit which is clean inside then this will be obvious. Be grateful and hold on to it. These are solidly built reliable units such that some units obviously withstood extended heavy use by Costco customers before they were returned.

Those units which were heavily used and did not have internal heat exchange coils cleaned or replaced may operate but not efficiently. **More importantly though is that you will be breathing in germs and mold which is a health hazard. Before your 90 days expire take photos and call Amazon to report the condition. They will have Woot contact you by email.
If you no longer have the box no worry, file the claim but do not initiate a return.

"Amazon Renewed is your trusted destination for pre-owned and refurbished products that are inspected and tested to work and look like new. A Renewed supplier who is Amazon-qualified and performance managed, performs a full diagnostic test, replaces any defective parts, and thoroughly cleans the product. The products will have minimal to no signs of wear, no visible cosmetic imperfections when held 12 inches away..."

other: The EL series is built with all components attached to a plastic base. There is no pan or tank for condensate only a few recesses in the plastic base underneath the guts. This explains why the capacity for condensate is only about a pint. While the construction appears robust it's easy to see how cleaning out environmental filth and mold from the condenser evaporator air and condensate passages might have been overlooked during "renewal" due to the labor involved. Over time efficiency declines on any ac with build up of dirt on the heat exchangers and the unit will emit odors.

I received a replacement today sent by Woot. Old dirty shipping carton. The cabinet is not assembled correctly and has signs of abuse, dirty brown rub marks. This after specifically requesting from Woot that the product be inspected prior to shipping. Perhaps they are down to the bottom of the barrel having shipped out all of the clean units early on. If you order one at this point then be sure to thoroughly inspect. If not "renewed" to like-new condition then report that right away to Amazon.

Quote from I CJ00TA :
Anyone vent this into an attic space? I need cooling for a network closet / server room in my house and trying not to invest in a mini split. No window access in my closet either

I had to put a hole in my stucco to the outside. I would NOT recommend venting into the attic. At least, that's what our contractor said, pretty strongly!
There's not free flowing, and unrestricted air flow. Wouldn't advise.
