For those that are spreading old information, here is an update that was posted by Plex on their blog[plex.tv] regarding HTPC:
EDIT: So, this next section used to talk about how we were ending support for Plex Media Player in six months, and with it, effectively ending support for HTPCs as a platform. We planned this with the best intentions. tl;dr, modern streaming devices provide a better experience for most people (the vast majority of you have already switched), and not spending energy maintaining PMP would mean we can focus more on making that experience better for everyone. Well, let's just say that although their numbers are few, the PMP army speaks loudly, in mostly civilized voices, with the occasional conspiracy theory peppered in. So, we hear you, and we're adjusting our plans a bit:
We will keep PMP in TV mode working as it is today and will fix serious issues which impact the product for the foreseeable future.
We will continue to invest in our player technology on streaming devices both to increase media compatibility, as well as to bring more "HTPC" features there (e.g. video zoom modes). We will also do a better job at communicating their capabilities, as it's pretty hard to get an accurate picture of that. Look for more information on that soon!
We are now actively investigating the best way to continue supporting HTPCs as a platform.
Benefits of paying for a Plex subscription:
1. Free apps, HW transcoding, and live/dvr tv For me, HW transcoding paid for the lifetime sub by itself. Thanks slipknottin 2. If you have a computer with hardware transcoding capability and a weak CPU, you need PlexPass to be able to use the hardware transcoder to stream to other devices. $75 is cheaper than having to buy a faster PC. Thanks burgerbob
3. DVR functionality is only available with the paid version. Thanks deanhatescoffee
4. The Plex Home function makes it worth it for me. I have two small children and the ability to make them Plex Home accounts where I can specify individually which shows and movies each child can see is 100% worth it. No separate "kid" library nonsense, which wouldn't even work since both kids are different ages. My kids never watch network TV because all their shows are on Plex, so they aren't bombarded by commercials and begging me for crap they see on TV. They can do it all by themselves either on their tablets, on the family room TV, or on the computer. There are other features that other people have already pointed out, but this one by itself is worth it if you are a parent to young kids. Thanks jlp7t

Could someone please explain to an dumb@ss like me exactly what plex is best used for? From what I read I can do something such access my movies and pictures on any device capable of plex app, by remote access to my device? Or do i upload my files online somewhere??
Most often it's used to access all forms of locally stored media (usually movies) from all smart devices (usually phones tablets and HTPC/Smart TVs).
The server is not changing. They are discontinuing Plex Media Player on PC. That had a TV mode and worked well with touch screens and Home Theater PC remotes.
They said the data showed no one was really using it so they replaced it with a new version that is set up more like the current Apple TV and Android TV apps, but missing some of those PC features that worked great with HTPCs like TV mode. So people using a remote on a HTPC are kind of screwed and the new version doesn't have audio pass through if you have your PC hooked up to a receiver. Hopefully they fix these issues.

Had to make a new account, but the code worked. Ended up cancelling my monthly billing and closed my old account, new account is active with lifetime Plex Pass. Thanks, OP!

Edit: If anyone has been waiting on those stupid invite only codes, setting deal alerts only to be disappointed time and again. THIS TIME IT WORKS.

For the record, I've used plex for years on this account and never got the lifetime offers. So it's not new only.
