When it comes to smart things, you ask one question:

1. Is it Z-Wave?

If yes, keep reading
If no, move on. There is no second questions.

Don't get anything proprietary. Don't support side businesses "works with Alexa" is usually marketing tactic to cover the lack of Zwave.

Think of ZWave as HDMI, USB, standard headphone jack, MicroSD card, etc.

ZWave is the standard for smart things.

Can't say I agree with ya there, Chief. If it's a brand like Google Nest or Amazon... well, Amazon everything else, it's probably a safe bet. Zigbee and Z-wave were small, proprietary tech at one time, became the de facto standard, then began to lose the stranglehold on home automation as more large companies started utilizing proprietary and cloud services. 10 years ago Z-wave was the "it" tech. In 5 more years IoT latecomers will be asking "Z what?"

Maybe, but the majority of this other stuff will cease to function as the companies give up and abandon them, like Best Buy's recent announcement.

Any recommendations for a Zwave garage door opener then? The GoControl/Linear Zwave opener has abysmal reviews on Amazon

I don't disagree with your assertion, but consumers have embraced the "home control from anywhere" concept which, for the average consumer, means proprietary cloud based services. For the more tech savvy types this may also include IFTTT, but this too is proprietary and subject to capitalization or discontinuation.
