I know I can't speak for everyone, but I think many of us need a cheap UNDER-shirt to absorb sweat and deodorant stains which protect our nice button-downs from such abuse. Also, if your skin is a darker shade, wearing white undershirts allows the true color of your outside shirt to stand out (kind of how primer works when painting).
The 3 for $20 tees you speak of may last long but are probably of a higher quality and not what some of us would spend money on if we just need a cheapie to go underneath our regular shirts. The Lauren tees can probably be worn alone if they are thicker whereas these cheapies only work as undershirts. I have a few Hanes that I would never wear alone in public; they are used strictly underneath other shirts.

I like the Costco Kirkland brand because the material is thick. I've had Fruit of the Loom tshirts years ago.....really thin material. Is it any better now? If not, maybe I can use them for waxing the car!
